Ok ladies- where did the past half year go? Wasn't my baby born last week? I've kinda dropped off the radar...

So little Liam is 6mo and we have tried a couple of solids (mashed apples and mashed peas). He seems to be a gagger. Does this mean wait? or just keep trying softer foods?

There seems to be this thing inside me saying not do pre-packaged foods (pablums and jar food) with the little man. My question- what do give your gaggy kids- fresh/real food (you know what I mean)?

Have any of you heard of the thinking that some gaggy kids have it because of a self-preservation because they tend to be allergic to stuff (food etc)?

fresh is always best if you have the time , if he's struggling i would try making the food smoother , i tried mashing when our dd was 6months and trying 1st solids didn't work , it was too alien for her and made her constipated so i made it smoother and that worked , i hope this helps :-D

Could you try to get the food smoother for this early stage - do you have a blender or blender stick (these are really convenient for baby food).

I haven't heard that gagging has any relation to allergies. My kids don't have allergies but were very gaggy with their foods as babies. They even still gag on some types of vegetables due to the strong tastes at 3 & 6 (although less so now for my 6 year old).

I'd say it means it's too early. No need for solids of any sort at 6 months. I'm a delayed solids advocate and prefer to not give any solids until closer to a year. Giving baby only breastmilk until then. :)

i had a gagger( and at almost 7 yo he is still a gagger) when we first realized that he had an issue ( about 8 months) we stopped all solid food ( he would gag and then throw up) and about 12-14 months he slowly started to eat stuff right off the table, depending on the textures. things like oatmeal, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, peas, milk on his cereal, soup still make him gag and puke so we don't even try with him anymore...if he wants to try he can ..

Me too. I'm a huge delayed solids advocate. Both of my kids by passed solids until 10 months and then they just started taking things of my plate. 6 months is a little early so backing off and trying again in a few months is fine. Doctors tend to push babies towards solids fast because they think that it will help mom sleep better through the night.

Delayed solids makes sense if you're not specifically trying to wean. Pablum in my opinion, is fluff food and there is no need to do it first. I like the idea of him picking up his food off his tray and eating it. He has more control that way of what and how much he eats. Not sure why I never really considered delayed solids.

I figure there is a reason, that I have this sense not to feed him packaged foods right now. Better listen to it.

Is he giving you cues that he wants solids? To me, that is more important than the age of the baby. My son actually showed interest in solids before 6 months. I made him wait until 6 months to start, though.

I never really emphasized food much, though. I tried spoon feeding and got bored of it, and just gave him finger foods. He developed his interest mostly on his own. I did a similar approach with his sister and her interest was much slower to develop.

They are both still nursing--he is 14 months and she is 44 months.

HTH.

This is called Baby led weaning. It's just basically waiting until baby is ready and letting them control the way they eat and how much they eat. There is a bit about it here

I'm a delayed solids advocate too! With my first dd I started her at 6 months and homemade all of her puree baby food. I really enjoyed doing it that way but decided to wait a few extra months with my ds. I started him on solids at about 8months. My dd2 is 6 1/2months and hasn't had solids yet and is quite happy to just have booby milk. Everyone keeps asking me if Lydia is on solids yet as it's the norm for them to go onto solids at or before 6months, but I just smile and say "No, she's fine with just booby milk". I tried BLW with my son but he was a gagger and it really unnerved me so I gave up. I'm gonna try it again with Lydia when she and I are ready:-D

Oh the joys and ups and downs of feeding!!!

I think you're totally right to listen to your mommy instinct. Don't give packaged foods if that is what you are feeling. I think it's great to make your own and take your sweet time. :)

Honestly, we're still figuring everything out here. At ~6 months we started Grace on some purees. It backed her up a lot so we stopped everything and just kept with breastfeeding. Around 7 1/2 we started very slowly doing a little here and there... because this baby LOVES food! She will stare you down, crawl/walk/pull whatever she can to get near you if you have anything. It's very clear that she wants to explore and enjoy some food!

Now at 8 1/2 months she is eating something everyday outside of booby milk. She seems more satisfied but it does not help her sleep better. Sigh. That's OK. That's not why I feed her.

Anyway... all this to say, listen to your mommy instinct! :)
