i went to the dct..thinking i was going to get a sonogram since i am 4 mths now..my dh and I really want to find out the sex of the baby..but we arent getting one till i'm 20 wks..i asked for one sooner but one of my many dcts said that they wont be able to see all the organs.. i think its odd that they do that...w/my last pregnancy i had placenta previa so i had alot of sonograms done..and considering my past pregnancy u would think they would want to check if the baby is ok and what not..

i also mentioned other problems i've been having like having chest pains and a numbness i've been feeling in my lower back..she didnt even check my breathing or anything..all she said was for me to go see my regular doctor bout it..I find it very odd and have never been told this before by my first pregnancy dct..

so do u think 20 wks is reasonable? have u ever been refrerred to ur normal non pregnancy doctor while being pregnant?

its all just frustrating..

Well, I didn't have an ultrasound until i was 6 months pregnant...

it really depends. However if you had complications before I would definitely be pressuring to get it done sooner. Does this have to do with health insurance coverage too?

If I were having trouble breathing etc, and they just brush you off, i would either demand care or switch doctors. You don't know if that's an early warning sign to something or not and they need to check it out and make sure you and baby are ok!!

For the numbness thing, is it all the time or just sometimes? Does it come after you lay/sit a certain way for too long? I know if I sat or laid a certain way during pregnancy, my lower back went numb because the blood flow was cut off (not cool) because of the weight of my belly. I couldn't lay on my back for more than a few minutes after like 5 months or anything like that b/c I would go numb.

In SA our Gyneas have a small sonar machine in their office, and you get to see baby at EVERY visit. :) and get send for a detailed scan around 23 weeks.
So I don't know if that answers your question... By 23 weeks, our boy was so obviously showing, anyone could see ... :) but before that, our doctor knew - the quality of his machine is not so clear, so it was all a bit fuzzy for us to make anything out..

As for being referred to your normal doctor... i don't know. Does not seem like your doctor has the time for you.
The breathing could be the baby pushing against your chest...
and the numbness... could be some blood flow thing.

I would find another doctor.
This is a very important & special time in your life, and if they so "hap hazzard" about it... i don't know, i would not enjoy and feel secure in their care.

All the best!

Not to be on the doc's side by ANY means, but I think that unless you show signs of Placenta Previa again, like a lot of bleeding around 12 weeks or so, or anything else, 20 weeks is normal for an ultrasound. I have been referred to my regular doc before for a very very bad cold I had when pg, but that was obvious what it was. If you feel the doc didn't understand how severe your chest pain was I would either call them back and ask again, or look into finding another doc...if your doc had a reasonable answer for the chest pain, and it isn't severe I would see how you feel and call if it gets worse.
I know sometimes in a doc's office we feel like we are cattle being pushed through the gate, but I am sure they see many many women who freak out about every little thing ( not saying you are one of these woman at all) and so they have become numb to what they see as complaining about stuff that's normal.

If you feel something is wrong with your baby or you are having symptoms that make you think something may be wrong this time, try and get an ultrasound earlier, but if you just want to know the sex, it's probably not going to happen. Yes they can probably see the sex of the baby that early, but there are certain organs that are really just too small or not developed enough yet that early that may have problems that get overlooked in an early ultrasound, so they wait til they are sure they can see everything as clearly as possible, and that is at about 20 weeks. Now I had my ultrasound with DD at 18 weeks becuase they said anywhere from 18-20 weeks, so I got in right away...LOL, so maybe ask if you can do it then.

I hope your chest pain and numbness resolve. I will bring you before the Lord with these issues. I also am getting the numbess pretty much all over now too, ahh the joys of pregnancy! I wouldn't change a thing though...it's just such a blessing!

Let us know what happens!

Blessings,
Amber

around here, they won't even do one before 20 weeks if there's no other problems usually! Before 18 weeks, there's a much greater risk of mistaking the sex and you can't see all of the development for potential problems and organ development that you need to before that too! Be patient, it's worth the wait for accuracy and a good solid answer on your baby's health!

I didn't get any ultrasounds at all! Of course, I was doing a home birth which makes a big difference. If you have real concerns, it never hurts to ask your doc about them.

Over here you used to get an ultrasound at 20 weeks and you could ask what the sex was if you wanted. Now they have stopped telling you due to people aborting babies of the sex they didn't want. So now you can't find out unless you go privately and pay for a scan. I think I will just have a surprise at the birth :D

gender ultrasound is at 20 weeks, that's normal. As for the other stuff- yah, I'd think they'de be concerned about the last pregnancy problem being an issue this time but, who know's? Did they find anything to worry about in the first U/S for this pregnancy? maybe that's what they're going on? ((((HUGS)))))) -ren

20 weeks is VERY typical! With my first two pregnancies I didn't have an ultrasound until around 20+ weeks, and only for routine check, I had to BEG to find out the sex of those babies. With number three, I was under different insurance (military) and saw a midwife; she had a small sono-machine in her rooms and I got to see my last three babies almost every single time I went in for my checks; it was so nice! Especiallly with the twins; they wanted to keep tabs on them as often as possible, so I got to see them in utero quite a bit! It was really nice!
