View Full Version : Is there something I am missing?

DS is completely day time potty trained, rarely has accidents. He turned 3 in November. He still very much needs a diaper at night, and I end up changing his sheets probably about 4 days a week because the diaper leaks or he ends up peeing out of the top of the diaper, KWIM?

I try to pretty much limit his liquids after about 3:00 and only let him have sips as he requests it and only drink at supper time (between 5:00 and 5:30) and watch how much he gets even then. He goes to the potty at the beginning and end of the bedtime routine.

Am I missing something? Is there anything else I can do to reduce the number of nights this is happening?! It seems like his diaper is leaking much more often than before we potty trained during the day!! When were your children able to get out of diapers at night?

Thanks....

I think that it's so individual for each child. I really didn't "do" much of anything to get my DD nighttrained. She just quit wetting at night, and so I put her into underwear.

She had a few accidents and now she's been totally dry at night for a few months, IIRC.

It sounds like you are trying your best! Each kid is different.

Yep.. each kid is different. I think this *might* be more of a boy thing too, but that's just from my experience. Brooke stopped wetting at night when she was still in diapers around 1, Gabriella was was night trained before she was day trained too but it was a bit later then Brooke. Lawson still wets at night.. almost every night, and he's 4! I've come to the conclusion that it's more then just a training issue with him. So we just have him in pull-ups and we are hoping he will grow out of it sooner rather then later.

Yep. Different with each child. My oldest was night trained at 3.5 while my youngest is 3.5 now and still isn't close to being night trained. She also still will have a day time accident every once in awhile. Best thing is not to rush it and let them train at their own pace. From personal experience rushing things will only cause some kids to dig their heels in and refuse.

Thanks.... that's pretty much what I figured. Definitely not putting any pressure on DS. The things we are doing I don't think he connects with working towards night training. He has, however, started protesting putting the diaper on at night, and I just tell him that when he is able to hold it through the night and not pee-pee in his diaper anymore, that's when he can wear underwear to bed.

Just getting tired of constantly changing and washing sheets and wondered if there was something more I needed to do to reduce the number of times this happens. I do find that if we eat supper later than usual or if he has soup, obviously he's getting more liquids closer to BT and it does make a difference. Oh well... it'll happen in time, I know! Thanks again.

at this age we have best luck with overnight pullups than diapers, they fit the larger kiddos better and seem to hold more liquid for less leaks!

I put waterproof pad on the bed so if my ds wet the bed then it saved how much I had to wash. Thankfully he's outgrown that about 1-2 years ago. (he'll be 8 soon)

Janell.... where did you get one? I looked for one at Walmart but the ones they had were $30 something, which I thought was a bit high. I did buy a mattress pad that I figured would work, but I still feel like I have to wash that and the sheets every time his diaper leaks.

Well, DS definitely isn't a "larger" child... he's pretty small for his age, wears a size 4 Huggies diaper. I do think, though, that we tried pullups at some point and for some reason did not like them. I think at that point the diapers seemed to be working better but maybe we need to try them again. Which kind do you use? It seems like they are not all the same and some are definitely better than others when it comes to diapers/pullups.

My son wears a size 4 Huggies too but the reason we do pullups is because he started protesting the diapers and I kind of understood. I think it was degrading for him to have to lye down to get a diaper on, yk? I mean he's 4! It made him feel like a baby. It didn't help that his 3 yr old sister doesn't wear a diaper to bed! So we got pullups so he can put them on just like his underwear all by himself. I just put it with his pjs each night and let him take care of it. The first thing he does in the morning is goes to the bathroom and takes his pullup off. I try to draw as little attention as possible to his bed wetting. I know he's not doing it out of laziness or anything behavioral and I don't want him to feel shame or dissapointment over something he can't control. HTH

eta.. we use off brands all the time and rarely get leakage. You might just have a super soaker.. maybe putting a disposable chuck pad under him would be helpful?

Hey, I was going to just agree with what everyone else said already but I also wanted to suggest you might reconsider the limiting of drinks also. It doesnt matter, either a kid is a bed wetter or they arent. And its not a boy thing gals, one of my girls did until she was well over that age. It was a major problem but we just took it in our stride. I didnt chastise her, she drank what she needed when she needed it. The only thing that did help sometimes was if I knew she was going thru a spell of it I would wake her up in the middle of the night for a wee. That helped. Other then that a dr told me if there is nothing psychologically or physically wrong, its just something some kids go thru unfortunately...

sorry...

Yeah.. I agree with Gen about not limiting his fluid intake. I find it hard enough to pump enough fluids in these guys as it is. Kids need LOTS of fluids!

have you looked online for a waterproof sheet? how big is his bed? this might sound like a dumb idea but, if you have a twin size bed, maybe you can just buy a plastic party table cloth. tuck on the mattress like a you would a flat sheet and then put the fitted sheet ontop of that?

You know... this had not even occurred to me. Thanks, Ashlee. Really good point I need to take into consideration. And thanks about the pull ups. We will definitely try them again.

Esther, thank you so much for this suggestion, not dumb at all. I just couldn't see spending $30 when I know I can get a mattress pad cheaper at places like Marshalls, Ross. His bed is a full size. Do you think a table cloth would fit that size? I would think it might be just big enough?

I really appreciate all the feedback. It helps so much to be able to bounce things off each other and get ideas you hadn't thought about.

:-D

I'm sure you could even cut it in half horizantal and lay it just where his body lyes. I'm glad you found this suggestion to be helpful :)[claploud]

Sorry, just seeing you asked about the waterproof pads. I've used the disposable ones (in with the adult diapers?) as well as some that are like flannel with a vinyl backing that I found in baby dept. - think it was crib size but I just put it where he usually wet. I certainly don't remember it being $30, maybe $15.

Ah, the nighttime bedwetting... well, my son is 6 1/2, and only REALLY stopped wetting through the night about 8 months ago? He was just a really really sound sleeper!

We actually started waking him before WE went to bed and taking him to the bathroom. Poor guy. He would be so embarrassed.

We actually used cloth pull ups with him, which were great, cuz they were so much like undies.

I also agree with the limiting of drinks. Either they wet or they don't... it doesn't matter when they're drinking or not.

Ha! I do wish this were the case :???:, and some nights he is but definitely not consistently.

Thanks for the additional feedback on the liquids also.

One Step Ahead has a pad that goes right on top of the fitted sheet and pulls right off so that you only have to wash it. It is $25 for full size but it would make clean up a lot easier. We are going to get some here in the next few months if our youngest is still filling her pullups at night. Also at baby stores you should be able to get what are called lap pads. They come in various sizes lap, mattress. They might work as well.

We bought a twin size mattress cover at Target, I think it was 7.99, works great!

just a quick FYI: a full size mattress is 54x75 and those plastic table cloths are 54x108. it would definately work on a fullsize mattress under the sheet. But like esther said, you could cut them in half and just put in the middle of the bed. at 54x54 (half) that would still cover almost the whole bed. and since you can get them at dollar stores for a dollar, they're cheap enough, AND you can hang them on the line outside to air dry and reuse them. Urine is sterile, from a medical standpoint, so just wiping down would suffice.

Really?! I could just wipe it with disinfectant, then, and it would be fine for a while...

Thanks!

UPDATE: We've been using pull ups for two nights, and so far, no leaks. Seems like when we tried them before they leaked or he kept waking up or something, so we thought he was feeling wet, like they're made not to absorb to help them with potty training? That was what we were thinking but now they seem to be working well. We are using Huggies this time. I think we had a generic brand last time. Good grief... who knows. Right? It can be tough to figure it all out sometimes.

Well, after a few nights of trying pull ups again, I am reminded of why they did not work for us before. I think the issues we are having with sleep, as detailed in the other thread, are mostly due to the pull ups. The problems began when we switched to pull ups. DH says there is something in them to help with training, whether it's designed not to absorb as well so they feel wet or if here is a cold sensation... I don't know, but DS has always needed his environment just so to sleep well, and you throw one factor off, and he just does not sleep well.

So, I will definitely be figuring something out to make the leak problem a little easier to deal with, as I'd rather be dealing with that than a sleep deprived child (and thus either hyper, cranky, or just "off" behaviorally) and him waking so much earlier than what we are used to in our house!

Thanks again for all of the feedback and suggestions. Is has been really helpful.

Just a quick update.... noticed some "nighttime" diapers that said they were designed to absorb more... or something like that and we have not had a leak since I tried them a couple weeks ago! NO clue why I hadn't ever noticed them before.
