I ordered some off eBay a while back that are flannel and 2 layers. I ordered 20, but would like to have about 20 more. (BTW, I can't sew, never have, so had to buy)
First question - How many do you think you should have on hand?
I would like my grandma to make the rest for me now that I have one for her to go off. She's a seamstress and could do this without a sample, but she's 83 and I wanted to make this as easy as possible for her. I will have her make flannel ones, but I saw something interesting on eBay. Someone had made some where there was flannel on one side and cloth diaper material on the other.
Second question - Do you think these would work better than flannel on both sides?
Third question - If these would work better, do you wash the diaper material before you sew or just wait until it's all sewn and then wash?
I thought I would ask the cd/sewing experts since I don't have a clue in this area.
Thanks for your help.

Hm I rarely go through more than like, 10 per day. So 20 would be fine for me, since I wash diapers every other day.
I don't know how many I actually have LOL. But, if I don't wash diapers and put it off for a day ,and I run out, I just use her baby washcloths (that i have like a million of) and they work just as well.
I have about 4 dozen, but I also have 2 kids in dipes ;)
If the wipes are the same fabric and the grain is going the same way, no need to pre-shrink.
If you are doing different fabrics, you definitely need to pre-shrink! Especially if you buy hemp. It shrinks a lot.
Search for hemp fleece fabric and that's what most people use. I have some like this and I love them. I like different wipes for different needs.
Personally, I like them to be 9-10 inches and square.

I just use regular baby washcloths and soak them with my homemade solution. I can't sew, either, lol! Actually, I *can* sew, but the only sewing machine I have is inherited from my mother and I don't know how to thread it (it's an antique). Plus, I'm kinda lazy, lol.
I have about 14 wipes/baby washcloths, which is more than enough to cycle the use of the wipes with my washing diapers.
I'm not sure that it would matter very much whether you use flannel or the diaper material, just as long as the cloth has the ability to wipe up... er, the stuff it'll be wiping up. I used an old diaper as a diaper wipe once (behind on laundry), and it worked just fine. Might be worth a try.
I would definitely wash the diapers before cutting them up to use for the wipes. And the flannel, too. I don't know if flannel shrinks, but I know that cotton does. I wouldn't want you to have your grandmom make these wipes that will shrink on one or both sides and end up being unusable after the first wash.

Velour makes very soft wipees!! And terry cloth works great to "grab" the poo.

Just my two cents here... My fave cloth wipes are the cheap washcloths from Dollar Tree. No kidding. The reason why I like them (other than the fact that they come in really pretty colors, lol) is that they slide across her bottom really well. Cotton fabric tends to be rougher on her bottom.
I just mix up some wipe solution in my container, throw 'em in, get em soaked and squeeze out the excess and Voila! Wipes.

That is EXACTLY how I make my wipes, lol. I use cheap Dollar Store (they didn't have any at Dollar Tree) baby washcloths for my wipes, too! :D

I've been using fleece.. so far so good! I will experiment a little with different fabrics now because I will have some scraps left over after making these diapers.
