View Full Version : Trying to decide on a summer wrap...

I have been wanting to get a new wrap for this baby. I currently have two ring slings, but am wanting something that will spread the weight over both my shoulders. I have been leaning toward a mai tei (however you spell that! lol) Remembering that even my ring sling sometimes got hot to wear, I'm wondering what the best choices for summer baby wearing would be? It gets HOT here in the summer. TIA!

the price on this one is a bit steep but I had never seen it before! Too cool!

A light search brought up this gypsy mama wrap~ They have two that are light weight and made for summer~ Here's the lightest weight and is supposed to be good for getting wet and such~

These are supposed to be good for warm weather too~

You get Bamberoo Solarveil Mei Tai's, they have a solarveil panel on the body of the carrier that makes it more breathable for baby. You can usually pick them up used for about $100 or less.

You also get wrapsody (used to be called Gypsymama) wraps that are called Bali Breeze, think Tara had one of those.

And linen/cotton blend wraps seem to be the favorite summer wrap among babywearers. I just bought my first linen/cotton blend so will give my review once it's here.

I have the Gypsy Mama woven wrap the Baby Bali Breeze...it's cooler than the stretchy one, but it can still be kinda warm, imo. I think a Mei Tai is cooler because the sides are totally open, but I like the wrap for it's (how would I say this...??) stability while wearing. I guess it depends on the size of your kiddo and type of Mei Tai, but Shaelyn liked to arch her back in it and I was very worried she'd fall out. Not so in the wrap...

Gauze Wrap!!

It's cotton, breathable, and you can pull part of it over baby's head for UV protection.

I'm making myself one... if you want one LMK.

Thank you!! I'm going to have a look at all your suggestions...Rach, whether it be about this or about the cloth stuff, I will for sure be emailing you over the next couple of weeks. :D

This is something I'd be interested in, I'm kind of clueless when it comes to wraps but I've heard that gauze wraps are great! How hard are they to make? I really am wanting to try one out with the new babe. :)

Umm....yeah, what she said! lol. Unless it has some structure, I'm completely lost. I'm open to looking into it though, so we'll see. :D

Hope you don't mind me asking here but, I know there are several ways to wear the cloth wraps, is there a good website or something that explains this more?

you should youtube wraps...there are awesome vids out there!

Yeah I have the BaliBreeze. It *can* still be a tad warm. But then that's my experience while out by the track on an Alabama summer day LOL

While I agree about the possibility of an MT keeping one a bit cooler (especially considering the material used as Eva mentioned), that may not be quite what you're looking for to carry a small one.

So, looking to wear a newborn, I'd strongly lean to one of the light-weight wraps.

Most sites that sell wraps show various ways to wear them. And as Kate mentioned, youtube. There are some really good videos on there giving step by step instructions. What I suggest, is go to the other sites, pick a few holds you're interested in, read through those instructions a time or two...THEN look it up on youtube and watch the video. It helps it make more sense. Then, of course, it will likely make even MORE sense once you have the wrap in hand to experiment. :)

I may have a couple sites bookmarked. I'll check then post back any findings. :)

Here's a vid to a rucksack carry, which is likely not what you're wanting for a newborn...but it at least gets you straight to some babywearing videos via the similar/suggested links to the side : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4T_t0YWSSY

Tara....are you saying that a mei tai is not a good choice for a newborn? Can you explain why....just trying to understand so I make a good choice! :D

A MT is designed so that the legs come out through the 'holes'. I'm trying to remember the 'recommended age' I heard for MTs. I'm wanting to think at least 3 months ? Eva may have more info on that.

I know some *have* worn newborns in MTs, but a wrap is more ideal. Fully enclosed, just snug that baby right in there, kwim? With an MT there are just too many gaps for a wee one. For my comfort anyway, like I said, some have managed it, evidently. I'll try to hunt down some more info on that if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

Must pry myself off here and to the kitchen right now though. I *really* don't want to...but...I have about 20 minutes to decide on, prepare and serve supper. *sigh* LOL Procrastinator extraordinaire at your service! :p

ok nevermind, all I am finding says MTs are great for newborns, just froggy their legs up inside, cinch the bottom a little closer or whatever

I mean, I *see* it, but I just wouldn't have thought it. I just think wrap would be my preference.

Guess you can't really go wrong either way. Though an MT *is* less material to manage. :)

Most recommendations for wearing a baby in a MT is from 4months of age or the point where babe can hold up their head. *But* there have been many people who have worn newborns in MT's like Tara said. I wore Lydia in a MT when she was a few weeks old, I just froggied her legs inside of the MT and tie the straps behind baby's back instead of under their butt as that will give baby's back more support. It's still a safe option but a wrap would keep babe more snug.

Ok good to know I wasn't just imagining that 'age requirement' deal. I was really beginning to think I was after the results from that quick search.

And yep, tie behind instead of under, which I do a lot anyway. When they're little to keep 'em close and then again as they are bigger and sleeping ;)

They are super easy...
go to the fabric store and ask them where the cotton gauze is.
get 6 yards if you want no seams
cut into 3 wraps
serge around the edges.
DONE!
sell the other 2 on C'Moms or babywearer board or eBay or keep for baby shower gifts.

the beauty of gauze is that it's a lot more sturdy so we also carry the older ones in the backpack style... 'rucksack'

I have heard a lot of great things about Beco carriers... I think I'll get one of those as well. I like options, I also like to carry one in the car at all times. Plus, we have definitely needed 2 baby carriers at a time in instances even when we didn't have 2 'babies'

Thanks for your input Tara and Eva! :D Rach....just FYI...I'm still thinking about what I want to do. I've got to spend some time looking at videos and some of the posted sites for wraps because they are still a bit overwhelming. But I did want to ask about the colours of the gauze wraps that you make. (Maybe this should be in a pm....I don't know.) On your site it looked like most were white...do they come in colours?

So, do I cut it into 3- 2ft sections?! I think I'll give that a try! :)

do fabric stores sell the soft stretchy knit material used to make moby wraps?

Ohhhh interesting thread! :)

I'd consider making one myself. The gauze ones are so pretty!

Kim, did you scroll all the way down Rach's page of wraps? There is a gorgeous olive green gauze wrap. I just love that! I'm thinking about contacting her about getting my hands on one of those! Hee hee! So yeah, they must come in different colors and patterns. I saw on another page of hers a really pretty chocolate hibiscus (I think!) pattern in gauze too.

No you cut it length ways so that you have 3 pieces that are 18-20 inches by 6 yds (not feet)

I believe it's jersey? Most fabric stores should have a selection of it.

I thought I did...but then I'm usually distracted/multitasking while on the computer so it's possible I didn't look everywhere. lol :D

yes that's correct... but again, if you don't want seams you will buy 6 feet and have leftovers. Like I said before, you can sell or keep for gifts or donate the other 2...

I can always see what's new in stock and buy another color, especially if 2 of us want it ;) With spring coming, it's a great time to look.
We can order online as well. The sky is the limit!

yes, right now I have white and chocolate/ivory hibiscus.
