Those of you who have the glucose test done, does your doctor have you fast? If so for how long before the test?

I failed my initial test again this time around and now have to do the 3-hour. Last pregnancy was the same way but the 3-hour came back normal, hoping for the same this time around.

The nurse told me I could eat a 'light' breakfast if I wanted but (obviously) nothing with sugar but I didn't eat anything. I had been fasting since about 10:00 the night before.

For the 3-hour test I have to do they ask that you fast for 12 hours before, I'm wondering if the initial test should be done after fasting?!

The glucose test is mandatory around here. No matter who you are (I think it is to get more money out of insurance and medicaid, but that's my wild guess).

Anyway, with both of mine, I was told to fast. And to not eat a lot of carbs the day before as that could alter it too. So, no spaghetti the night before. They make you go and sit in the office after drinking the stuff and you are not allowed to leave. And all you can do after is drink from the water fountain. Which, wasn't enough for me to try and get rid of the nasty feeling in my stomach from that stuff, let alone feeling like I was going to puke (don't eat for how long and then chug a cupful of sugar. Sorry, gives me a headache and a severe upset stomach from the jolt) I've never been subjected to the three hour test. So no real advice there, sorry. Just probably the same for the one hour. Fast, no carbs. What really stunk, last time it was done in the afternoon. It was a miserable miserable day.

With mine they said absolutely NO fasting for my test. I had peanut butter and a little jelly on toast for breakfast before mine. It came back normal. I've never had to do the three hour test. Hhhmm...

Ack! I'm supposed to do mine this week. I almost forgot. I'll have to check my forms and see if it tells me to fast....I really don't remember from past ones. (BTW....I don't like this test either....YUCK!)

Just had mine today and they said no fasting. Only if I fail it, I have to come back and do the 3 hour one.

And honestly... I still puke if I don't eat first thing in the morning. So... pregant woman + fasting + drinking sugar drink really fast = disaster in my mind! :)

Ugh, so confusing! And yes, I think making pregnant women do this is so mean! LOL I think just something in my chemistry doesn't jive with the first test for some reason. I'm fairly confident I don't have diabetes but with the family history and my suspicion of having it during my first pregnancy I hesitate not to do it, so, Thursday will be interesting. [whatwacko]

By the way, my doctor told me that drink has the equivalent sugar of 6 candy bars and a can of soda?! He wouldn't allow me to just eat 6 Snickers though, darn it ;) haha

Oooh... gross! Good thing I didn't know that ahead :D

No wonder I sit in the office after being forced to chug it and fight throwing up. Who in their right mind would eat that many candy bars and have a soda? Even when craving stuff like that while pregnant I can't do it.

And the only thing that works to not have that stuff come up on a round trip ticket is the threat that if it does, I'll just have to chug another one. Which, frankly, I'd prefer to avoid.

It's funny, the drink itself doesn't bother me so much, I grew up drinking cheap Winn-Dixie orange soda... it's the after effect... feeling sick, gross, shaky, heart racing, feel like I'm gonna pass out. Ugh. I don't like feeling that way...

Wait a minute! That is disgusting. They specifically tell you not to eat that kind of crap because it's unhealthy for baby and then they tell you you have to pour that nasty stuff down your throat. Forget it. I think I'll fight that this time around. Puke.

Yeah, so not pleasant!!

I'm pretty sure that the initial test is NO FASTING! I remember there being a mama on my other board that I frequent that was adiment about this. You should eat normal and then take the test. If it comes back iffy then they have you go to fasting measures and the 3 hour test. But that's just what I remember and not what a doc told me. I did not fast though - again, from what I can remember.

I hope it comes back normal for you though!! I sure wish they made all these things much more clear!!!

And... EEWWWW!!!! 6 candy bars and a soda!?!? That's just nasty!! I agree... if you're not prone to it and don't have any history of it, then try to not do it. That's just... horrible!!!! ACK!

I think I'd be ok if I could just have 2 candy bars and a few sips of soda... think they'd let me? lol :rolls eyes:

When I was preggers with dd I was getting prenatal with a midwife. She was of the opinion that if you don't have a history and you aren't showing any signs that it isn't a necessary test. I managed to avoid it with that pregnancy. Not sure I'll be able to with this one. I have a doc appt. tomorrow and he won't be impressed that I haven't been able to get it done yet (was planning to Friday) but oh well. I may try to talk to him about skipping it....
