Hannah's bottom is looking a little red, so I applied some Aveeno diaper rash cream and put a prefold on her, since I can't use Fuzzi Bunz with rash creams.
Right at the moment, I'm letting her go diaper free on a thick blanket. Any other early rash prevention steps? I don't want a little rash to turn into a big one.
Also, I'm wondering: CD moms do you use hypoallergenic or regular detergent? I just started using regular detergent after using Purex Free, so I'm wondering if she's a little sensitive to it.

All of my babies were VERY sensative to detergents. I always double rinsed my diapers to make sure there was no soap left in them. I used plain old cornstarch at every change to help prevent rashes. If they did get a rash, I used Diprotex diaper rash cream.
I would use balmex when my kids would get a rash. It seemed to work really well. Be careful when you change your detergent some little one's have to use certain kinds.

The thing that has worked best for our kiddos rashes is plain old Vaseline. We just put A LOT of it on after we change them and it does the trick. A lot of diaper rash ointments that I tried just made it worse. I buy name brand Vaseline, because Wal-Mart's had fragrance in it and that made things really bad. :(

TEA! Make a bowl of really strong tea and soak an old washcloth in it... then you can put it right next to the baby's skin and diaper her up. Especially if you're using cloth.
Are you using cloth wipes? Cuz I find trashie wipes don't help with the rashes. I put a couple of drops of tea tree oil in my wipe water bottle, and we have yet to have a rash with this one.

Yes, I'm using cloth wipes. I make my solution from tea trea oil, warm water, and baby shampoo.

try and cut out the baby shampoo... and doing a double hot rinse on the diaps might help. is it a spotty rash? if it's little dots then it's probably yeast.

It's not really a full blown rash yet. Just redness.

We don't CD, but we haven't had a diaper rash yet on our DD, and she's 16 months old.
I worked in nursing homes and adult foster homes for a LONG time, and have seen every kind of skin breakdown possible. I have also seen every kind of diaper rash ointment or "treatment" used too. After seeing everything, we decided to use A&D ointment. We use the ointment on her bottom at night before she goes to bed because we stopped changing her diaper at night, and the ointment acts as a barrier on her bottom against the urine. When we did change her bottom at night we would only put the A&D on her when she had a BM that seemed to irritate her bottom. (we stopped because she started sleeping longer/through the night or when she did wake up she would wake up too much and was hard to get back down if we changed her)
I like A&D because it's pretty mild and can be used a lot without major side effects. I have tried Balmex when a BM here and there had irritated her bottom a bit, and it only seemed to make her little bottom more red.
Since she hasn't had a real rash, only a slight red tint to her bottom after an irritating BM I don't know how Balmex or anyother cream would be to help heal it, but I know that so far we have had a good outcome in the preventing department!
I hope you find what works well for you two!!
Blessings,
Amber
Benjamin got diaper rash after his first week...we'd been lazy and hadn't changed his diaper often enough. I'd already bought natural diaper rash cream from WF, and used that a few times, and it went bye-bye. (Of course, we also started changing his diaper more often. )
I launder the diapers w/ the same detergent I use for all our laundry, the 7th Generation brand from Whole Foods. It's chemical free and all that. I've heard Ivory Snow and Dreft recommended for baby laundry, which are probably cheaper.

Ds was getting recurring rashes for a while when I first started CDing; eventually I narrowed it down to the enzymes in detergent (which almost every detergent has now!). The enzymes don't completely wash away, then react with the protien in urine and eat away at the skin. I tried Charlie's Soap by it just doesn't cut in in hard water, so eventually I found Sun detergent w/o enzymes and he has been rash free.
I have heard that you can use either plain yogurt or breastmilk to treat a diaper rash...both would be safe with FBs.
Cornstarch is very, very good on rashes
Apparently, my mum tried everything on me, then my grandma told her to try cornstarch, and it worked a treat! Down here in Australia, you can get pure cornstarch baby powders, and they work really well :)

We've used cornstarch also - I just buy the regular kind they sell at the supermarket for cooking and put alot of it on ds' bottom and it always helps with any rash or irritation he's had so far - PTL he has never had any more serious diaper issues.
The only downside is that after they go to the bathroom you will see a lot of little cornstatch pellets falling out of the diaper when you change them
Normally we use Desitin, the thick original kind, as a preventative measure in his diaper; we found the creamier formulas just did not work as well bec they wipe off too easily and leave bottoms unprotected in the diaper.
I agree with buttercup_97140 that A&D should work well also for preventing or treating.

Of course, not having a baby yet, I haven't done this. But a lady I work with does this for her grandson. She puts just a drop or two of Dreft in his bath water and lets him soak his bottom in it for a little while. She said she did this with her son, too. It's what she's always done and it's worked. I guess repeat a couple days or so.

FYI, everybody, Dr. Sears says not to use cornstarch because it encourages the growth of yeast. I didn't know that either until I read his book!

Both my boys would and get diaper rashes when they are teething. So it may not be anything to do with the detergent. Keeping her dry and chanign her as often as possible, letting her go diaper free for a while, all helps!

Yeah, she's definitely teething. There's one pushing through her bottom gum.

Yogurt is great especially if it's a yeasty rash, Breastmilk reallly does help heal rashes I've done iit, and aloe from a fresh aloe plant, and for the stubborn ones, we break down and use Triple paste. We got a sample from our ped and it worked great, but we use it only for the really bad ones. This one he has now seems diet related so we'll be doing the elminiation thing.
But yours does sound like it could be a sdetergent thing. We use Trader joes and it's great, no perfumes, no additives, and he's just fine, but we dont CD
hope that helped

Actually, the CRN at my docs office says you shouldn't give baby a bath when they are getting or have a diaper rash... it's better to give a makeshift shower to them. Sitting in the warm water allows the bacteria to grow and irritates the skin more than helping it. For me, I bathe them in the tub faucet. Air the rash as much as possible... I usually place on a diaper only after they eat or drink so as to avoid accidents [cheerful] . Also, better to use soap and water instead of wipes. For creams... I use A&D with or without zinc oxide.

A&D ointment works really well and so does the Aveeno but I stick to A&D we are dealing with a diaper rash now as well. Also FYI I used to use baby powder but don't anymore my mil showed me in a medical book this past weekend where the use of powder in that area especially in adult women but in all females tends to increase the chance of cervical cancer.....so I don't use it anymore. A&D works so much better.
We use Bourdoex (?) Butt paste....bad name but it works great, most ointments don't come off easy when you change the diaper and are more painfull...this stays on and wipes right off....works great...dd

I know you posted this awhile ago and I am sure your baby doesn't have diaper rash anymore but this could be good info for the future. My oldest had really bad diaper rash once and my grandmother told me that burnt flour is what they use to use on thier children when they were young. I tried it and it worked wonderful. All you do is burn flour in the broiler pan on high broil until it is dark brown. It really stinks! Just continue stirring it. Hope this will help for the future!

My grandma used the same remedy on my dad. I remember her telling me that when my ds was a baby. Luckily I never had diaper rash problems but you're not the only one who has been told or used that remedy before. Who says expensive creams are better then homemade tricks?
