Last night and this morning dd has been complaining that it stings when she pees. Is this a sign of a yeast infection or something else? (I'm one of those really weird people who have never had one myself.) Any suggestions as to how to deal with this? I'll take her to the doctor if we need to, but if we can deal with it at home then that would be preferable.

My daughter had it hurt to pee once. She was trying to hold it because of it hurting. I just loaded her up with lots of fluids until she had to pee and couldn't hold it any longer. It passed after that one day.
You might try giving Fiona a cranberry supplement from the health food store or unsweetened (no sugar please, that makes it worse) cranberry/apple juice or something like that.
Does she use bubble baths or sit in soapy water? Children shouldn't sit in soapy water for prolonged periods of time for this reason.
Has she learned to wipe from front to back when she uses the restroom?
Good luck!

Sounds like a UTI instead (unless she has scratched herself raw)

Ditto Ruth & Tammy. Sounds more like a UTI and I would go with lots of water/sugar free cranberry and do a little "wiping" lesson and avoid soap in that area for a few days. Sounds gross, but excess soap or bubble baths can irritate...just make sure she is clean with damp washcloth until clears up.
If she has a fever or has a LOT of pain, call the doc...otherwise I would give it a couple of days and see if it disappears.
Good luck! Will be praying for her!

agree with previous posters.
you may also want to opt for showers instead of baths for a few days. you can also try probiotics to try to eradicate any bad bacteria.

I took Aidan once to the doctor because she was complaining about it hurting and burning and I thought she could have an UTI. Turns out that simply wiping incorrectly has the same side affects as an UTI. As long as there is no fever I would simply load her up on fluids to flush and let her sit in an oatmeal bath. Doesn't matter what kind of oatmeal. That will help soothe the area and promote healing.
Thanks for the advice! We'll go get her some juice this afternoon. She did have *one* bubble bath last week (we don't usually have them) but I'm not sure if that would be the cause since it was so long ago. We'll be sure to do more lessons in wiping too. Hopefully it'll clear itself up. I appreciate the input! :D

Oh, also, just wanted to add that soap is not necessary at all to clean the genital area on girls or boys. It washes up just fine with water and soap can be irritating to the sensitive tissue.

I used to get UTIs all the time when I hit puberty. They cleared up after college thankfully.
Tons of cranberry juice and water. Tons of yogurt too. No soap, bubbles or the like. Everyone else has covered it.

Skimmed through replies real quick.. forgive me if I'm repeating but i just wanted to mention.. with a uti the stinging will come as the pee is coming to an end, ykwim? If it's stinging/burning from contact.. like the urine coming into contact on her skin in that area she might just be raw. That can happen from not wiping well enough or in some cases wiping too much or too hard. It can also happen if her urine is highly concentrated from not drinking enough. like others have said.. I would get her drinking cranberry juice (not from concentrate and no sugar) just in case. If she really can't handle a few ounces of straight cranberry then try blending it or buying an apple juice blend. The straight stuff is best though. And of course make sure she's drinking LOTS of water. :-D
Fiona and I had a chat this morning about wiping. (Had one a while back, but haven't been monitoring her very well.) She seemed to understand. Especially since there is discomfort *now* she is willing to listen and do what I say to make it go away. I don't think she is raw, she is more of a 'dabber' than a wiper. But I've been having her drink lots of water today and we now have some cranberry juice. (100% juice no sugar not concentrate) I'm going to offer her some in a bit...I'm hoping she'll drink it. In any case, when she used the bathroom this afternoon she said it felt a bit better.
