....as in feeling cruddy today and don't want anything to do with it. Feeling kind of nauseous this afternoon....it's different than the typical nausea I've experienced though. [whatwacko] When you have days like this, do you make something for dinner that is more appealing to you and feed it to everyone, or make a 'typical' dinner for the fam and eat something else yourself? Just wondering....I'm trying to decide what to do for tonight. :???:
Jessy 11-30-2009, 07:24 PM I totally know that feeling, ugh! I would usually just carry on with my typical dinners and nab something else or add a side dish that sounded good enough that I could get down, I went weeks where nothing, absolutely nothing, sounded good :(
That is totally where I am. Blah. I think I'm going to make pancakes for dinner because the kids will *LOVE* me for it, and I'll eat whatever, whenever. Just had some saltines with cheese and am feeling a bit better, but not enough to get started on a really involved cooking session. (I *was* going to make homemade pizza for dinner - originally - but believe it or not, I can't even stomach the thought of *handling* all that food. Maybe tomorrow.)
Crissyanna 11-30-2009, 07:38 PM On those days, it normally happened to me after I had something in the crock pot all day and I had to smell it. I'd just lay on the couch and cry as Hubby ate it and told me how good it was, it smelled great, and am I sure I didn't want any.
Then, one night, I was dying for tator tot casserole. He made one, by the time it was done cooking, I couldn't stomach the smell and all I wanted was a frozen pizza. I ate a pbj that night, made him mad as I wouldn't tell him what was wrong for an hour and a half, and then he bundled me up and got me in the car and drove me to the store and informed me we weren't leaving until I had picked out a pizza. I was crying in the frozen food aisle and felt like a moron for it. By then of course I didn't want the pizza.
On days when then nothing sounds good, I nibbled. Like, hey, maybe this would be good, or that. I would cook for my husband (unless he had the day off and I made him cook that day). When I was preggo with number 2, I'd fix something like pancakes and suffer and then scrounge for something that I thought would stay down. It was normally pepperoni hot pockets for some reason...
Hope you find something you can tolerate. This too shall pass.
Thanks for your comments, Crissyanna. Oddly enough, now I want to know how to make a tator tot casserole! I was just thinking potatoes are about the only thing I feel like eating, but I certainly can't get away with serving just mashed potatoes for dinner. If you get back to this thread (or if anyone else knows the recipe) please share! :D
ETA: Although, like many pregnancy cravings, we don't have tator tots at home! lol. I haven't bought them in ages! I might have to send dh to the store! heehee

I don't measure, I just make it to fit in the pan I'm using. I normally use my 8x8 baking dish
I normally use a pound of ground beef (browned and drained)
1-2 cans cream of mushroom soup (depends on how soupy you like it)
tator tots
velveeta
Spray dish with non stick (if you don't, you will regret it). Put down a layer of tots. Then beef and soup and cheese (I normally slice it), then more tots and beef and soup and cheese. I can normally get in two layers. Bake about 45 minutes or so until the tots are hot all the way through (took it out early once. Big mistake...soggy tot casserole is NOT good).
You could try other potatoes. We did something similar once with seasoned fries and it was very good. Don't think we put in the soup then.
And yes, I have served just mashed potatoes myself. Normally loaded in cheese and ranch dressing (throw in some ham or chicken to make it a real meal). Or do yourself some potato soup. Serve with grilled cheese for those who want some. Easy, to make, shouldn't smell up the house, and leftovers are nice for lunch tomorrow.
I pretty much fix what *I* think sounds good and feed it to everyone.... unless it's something I know everyone else won't like, like Green Bean Casserole. ::snort:: But, most things that I can eat this pregnancy are high carb, high protein, so it typically sounds good to everybody else too. :) I figure the whole nine months won't be this way, so big deal if we eat a little less than "super healthy" during this short lived period. If it makes life easier when things are really hard, then I'm all for it! :)
mumof3boyz 12-01-2009, 12:20 AM How well I know exactly what you're feeling!! The first 16 weeks I couldn't stomach anything with fat, most carbs, miracle whip or melted cheese... I only wanted mashed potatoes, cream of wheat & fresh veggies/fruit! Then I would just make some kinda meat for dh and the boys (while plugging my nose!) and mashed potatoes & fruit/veggies for us all. I relied quite a bit on M&M Meat Shops - don't know if you have them in Drum but there's some in Calgary & Airdrie. Their chicken fingers and steaks and stuff are pretty good but not too expensive. It tided us over those first weeks and now I can cook again!
krazee4jc 12-01-2009, 01:13 AM Kim, poor thing :( Hope you pass this soon (((HUGS)))
Wow, that tater tot dish sounds so yummy :-D
Israel 12-01-2009, 02:42 AM I'm right there with you, Kim.... feeling the Blahs [whatblah]! I usually fix my usual, and if I don't feel like eating it...then fix myself what I DO feel like eating. I feel gross when I eat AND I feel gross when I don't eat...so, I may as well eat!
I hope this nausea stuff doesn't last too much longer for you... or me![whatwacko]
So I had sent dh to the store on the way home from work to get milk and eggs and he came home with bacon because it was on sale. (We RARELY buy it!) We made some up with the pancakes and boy was it yummy! :D I ended up still feeling gross for the whole evening, but at least I was happy eating the bacon! heehee. Then I just snacked on other stuff for the evening. (I *really* don't like pancakes.) Odd that I've felt this way for the last two days though....I had started to feel a bit better for the last week or so. *shrugs* Hopefully today will be better.

Hey, Kim~ I was thinking about you last night as I was eating some REAL Ginger Bread Men cookies from Trader Joes (a wholesome food store here in NC) and they actually helped. I have never liked Ginger... since my first pregnancy years ago when my dad cooked heavily with ginger and I got sick from the taste, I've never been able to eat it. But these Ginger Bread cookies ROCK and they actually help my nausea. They are *REALLY* made with Ginger and taste fabulous... not too sweet. Have you tried a Ginger cookie?
Good suggestion, Jen! We were just at Walmart and the kids saw gingerbread cookie kits and I told them we'd make them, but didn't make the ginger connection! Maybe we'll make them sooner rather than later! :D
mumof3boyz 12-01-2009, 05:10 PM Kim,
I found some hard ginger candies at a whole food store in Calgary that did wonders... also Preggie Pop Drops & basically any hard candy seemed to help if I slowly sucked on it. Peppermints included. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I've actually never tried the hard candy route, nor the preggie pops....I've never had to battle with nausea quite like this before. Today has been better, thankfully. I'm trying to do better with eating more frequently.
