View Full Version : Is Cramping and Spotting Normal early on?

Is cramping and spotting normal at 5 weeks? I'll be in my 6th week this week and have been experiencing strong cramping with light spotting. I've noticed the cramping will radiate toward my back. I have had sharp pains on my right ovary area. Then it goes away and returns. One time I had to stop on the stairs for the pain to subside before I could continue down the stairs. I'm trying not to be a typical first time Mommy that questions everything.

It can be, but then, it isn't always.

I would call the doc asap for peace of mind.

And don't worry about all those questions. We all get them.

I agree it can be very normal but worth letting your doctor know your symtoms and maybe a quick visit. It will be worth you peace of mind that's for sure.

Hugs and prayers I was a nervous wreck with each and every one of my pregnancies. I think its normal to be, but try to enjoy. And ask away, there is nothing wrong with asking ever. That's what we are here for, we all support and are there for one another.

Hugs and prayers.

Here's what Baby Center has to say about spotting/cramps:

I'd make sure to be in contact with your mw to let her know. I'll be praying for you. Try to take it easy and rest.

I totally agree, I would be calling asap. Any cramping or spotting, is worth a call put in. I would put my feet up, relax and take some deep breaths. I'm sure everything is fine but, you need your rest mommy!!

Oh I am praying for you my sister, I'm sure everything is fine, but prayer never hurt anything. I agree that you should call your md.
Lord God I just pray you would wrap your arms of comfort and health around Grace. Please Lord protect her and her baby from any harm. I praise you for your gift you have given to her, I pray Lord that you will raise this baby up to be a healthy warrior for you. That she and her husband will teach it Your values and he or she will be a mighty warrior for you. Protect Grace from all harm, and comfort her. I pray Lord for the bleeding and pain to stop so she can have comfort and peace. I pray Lord for her peace right now, surround her in your peace. In your loving and healing Son's name. Amen

The other mommies on here are 100% correct...it can be normal and then it cannot be normal too. Let us know what you find out and we're praying for you! Stephanie :D

I also agree, see if you can get in for a ultrasound and hCG level. Although spotting can be totally normal, and even cramping can be...I always have cramping when newly pg, but it can also be a sign of miscarriage. An hCG level 48 hours apart can really give you an idea of what's going on, and an ultrasound can show you a heartbeat by now.....
I pray for this baby, but remember no matter what happens, the Lord knows the exact days this baby will live....it's so comforting to know that he is in control. Please keep us informed!!

I would definitely call and try to get HCG and progesterone levels. I've been pregnant 3 times and always had horrible cramping around 4-6 wks. I think it's just the way my body adjusts. With ds, I had one day of bleeding (more than just spotting) and all was well. But obviously spotting and cramping together can be a cause for concern. Please let us know what you find out.

Thanks for all of the responses, concerns, and prayers....I feel at home here among my sisters.

I called my midwife yesterday to report in. I continue to have the cramping but am hoping it's normal for this early in pregnancy.

I have an appointment Friday. I am thinking if anything drastic were going to happen, it would have by now? Given the cramping has been consistent but then again, I'm not sure how long cramping occurs before a m/c takes place.

I'm keeping my focus on the Lord and His will. I am trusting in Him and remaining peaceful in His plan.

Blessings to you all for your care!

Actually, I had three very early mc, and didn't have cramping with ANY! I had cramping with my successful pregnancies and thought that was bizarre. I had cramping through all three of them (the successful pregnancies), until the very end, when my real contractions kicked in. Isn't that called something? Irritable Womb Syndrome or something? ::shrugs:: All I know is that sometimes, cramping doesn't mean a thing; sometimes it does, just depends... better to be safe than sorry... but, I agree with you that you would think it would have happened by now with all your cramping, *if* it *was* going to happen. Still praying for you! ::hugs::

I think that cramping and spotting can occur when the egg is attaching?

Glad you called the midwife.

I didn't get cramps with my m/c until the second day of that torture (long sick story, not going to scare you). Nothing with my successful pregnancy.

Everyone is totally different. Remember that. Just like some women puke the enitre nine months, some never have to kneel over the toilet at all during that time.

Just, take it easy, use this as an excuse to let the housework go a bit and eat well and often and drink tons of water.

I'm very happy you called the mw. It's always good to let them know what's going on no matter what.

With this pg, I didn't start having any cramps until about 10 weeks. And they were very brief and light (maybe 1 or 2 a day) - ligament stretching type cramps. I had some spotting/heavy bleeding early on (around 6wks), but we figured out it was hemorroids.

With the mc, I had spotting at 4 weeks about every other day - no cramping. Then at 5 weeks, I started heavy bleeding and horrible cramps.

Yes, as everyone else has said, every pg and baby is different. Take comfort in knowing God is in control and knows your heart. Praying for you.

Thanks for all of the thougths and prayers. The prayer warriors here are amazing!

I had more spotting the morning of the appointment and some on Saturday. I had 5 tubes of blood taken Friday. I made sure I confined myself to bedrest over the weekend. I should get any negative results by this Friday. The cramping continues, I'm just praying this is all "normal".

The midwife said everything should be fine.

God Bless you all!

You are being prayed for here, Grace. [pray] Don't worry about anything. Like many pp said, we are all different. When I had my m/c, I had slight lower back pain, but absolutely no cramping and no bleeding.

So happy to hear you took it easy this weekend. That is so important.

Much love,
~gina
