View Full Version : About Fainted At the Birth Center~
Yeah, today was SUPER interesting. I ate something (toast with peanut butter and a small amount of jelly; two slices) about an hour before we left for my appointment. I drank my glucose drink in the car (Tommy was driving) on the way to the birthing center. I made sure I took it with plenty of time to spare; I would rather be sitting around waiting for the blood draw time to come, than miss it and have to take the stuff again. I don't mind the taste so much but it does make your mouth and tummy feel a little yucky, ya know?
Anyway... I started having tunnel vision right away... but I've had tunnel vision in the past when my blood sugar gets *low*, so I figured I would just need to eat something when we left the birth center. I checked in once I got there, and sat in the waiting area for my blood draw time to come around. While sitting there I was getting SUPER sleepy, then my right hand/arm went numb, then my lips went numb, then my GUMS, then my tongue. I started feeling light headed and "out of it". I went up to the desk wobbling a bit and told the gals what was going on, slurring away.
They hurried back and got the midwife, who then took me straight back and had me lay down. By this time, I couldn't even form a clear sentence, and felt dangerously close to passing out, which I've NEVER done in my life. She immediately took my blood pressure and pulse, both were normal/good. So she got me some water and some crackers with natural peanut butter. I couldn't even sit up. I still couldn't talk, and she was trying to keep me coherent by asking me questions and getting me to at least babble.
After about an hour, I started to come around... but I'm *still* a little foggy and have a horrible headache. I have NO idea what that was all about. Major sugar crash we think. We at least don't think it was stroke or anything heart related. But man that was scary. She said if I continued to feel bad, or got worse again to rush to the hospital, but since I was feeling better... we came home. Wyatt was doing great, thriving away in there like nothing was happening... oh, and I'm still measuring two weeks ahead.
I have a hunch, but have done no reading and was still too out of it to ask the midwife, that I'm gestational diabetic. I'll find out for sure tomorrow. I've *never* reacted to the test that way, and i've taken it five other times. Weird, right? [whatwacko]
Anyway... it was exciting, to say the least... and I'm so thankful that I didn't pass out and hurt myself. Anyone else experience anything similar after the test?
leona 11-18-2009, 06:28 PM I am not sure if we have that test over here , what was it for ? i cannot remember having to drink anything. it sounds awful , so glad you ok and baby doing well :-D
Jessy 11-18-2009, 06:31 PM Man Jen, that is scary! During my first pregnancy I had exactly that happen to me. I only made it to 24 weeks and never had testing done but I think I had gestational diabetes. It's so scary when that comes on and that feeling you have no control :( I hope it doesn't happen again. I am glad to hear that Wyatt did wonderful through it all though. :)
ChamomileFriend 11-18-2009, 07:41 PM Glad you are ok and hope the midwife does have answers for you tomorrow [hug]

Hey gal~ It's to check you for Gestational Diabetes. The drink/test really isn't so bad... but man, today was a nightmare.
Thanks gals~ I'm pretty surprised to find out that, so far, I'm the only one that's responded like this. But, this isn't my first time doing this test... so... weird, weird, weird. :???:

ACtually, here, they do it for just about everyone. Fat, thin... doesn't matter. That's America for ya......

That's pretty much the case in Canada too. If you are with a midwife, don't have a history of getting it or any symptoms, then you may escape it (I did with my second pregnancy), but otherwise, everyone is sent for it. But I agree it is a yucky test. I'm sorry you had such a bad reaction to it, Jen. Do you get your results today?

Yeah, I've taken it for each and every pregnancy, even when I was super-thin. Ugh. I don't get it. Whaaaaaaaaatever.
Kim, I should be hearing from them sometime today. If I don't hear from them by lunch I'm gonna call them~ :)
mumof3boyz 11-19-2009, 12:45 PM I'm so NOT looking forward to that test! I don't even like sweets to start with and especially not sweet drinks. Ugh!! My mom and one of my sisters always had gestational diabetes and now in her old(er) age my mom was diagnosed with it for good...
Israel 11-19-2009, 03:54 PM Praying you don't have gest diabetes. It's a good thing you feel ok now though...that must have been freaky! God Bless you and Wyatt, friend!
melloyellochelle 11-21-2009, 08:06 PM Hey Jen
I'm sorry you had such a yucky day! I hope you continue to feel fine and that your results are neg for GD. Any word yet?? Praying for you!
savedbygrace 11-22-2009, 03:07 AM praise God you are okay. I'll continue to be praying for you dear friend.
buttercup_97140 11-23-2009, 12:15 AM Even skinny women can get Gestational diabetes. It's more common in overweight women, but it has to do with the hormones a placenta releases. It's not "really" diabetes, it's actually insulin resistance....meaning your body does not know how to use the insulin you have in your body, or use the insulin in the body properly or on time. Because of this, sugar stays in the blood too long.
I have taken the test six times I think. Everytime I feel all sleepy after I drink the test, then at the end I get all shaky, slurr my speech, get wobbly and start sweating. The reason I get like that is because my blood sugar crashes because my body finally kicks in with the insulin, but by the time it kicks in, there is so much insulin in my blood stream that it eats up all the sugar. Big time sugar crash!
Are you going to have redo the test? If you don't want to redo the test, you can always do blood sugar checks for a week or so and watch the pattern. This can tell you what your body is doing during the night and after meals. If your fasting blood sugar in the morning is over 90-95 that is not good. An hour after meals you want it under about 140.
I hope you don't have GD....it's hard to eat when pg, but it's worth it in the end when your baby is healthy. It's also can a bit scary, because there are risks associated with having GD. Some babies bodies do not start to regulate their own blood sugar right after birth and if their blood sugar crashes, they can have issues. No need to worry about that though, not yet anyways, but make sure you know all the risks if you come up having GD.
Blessings,
Amber
LaDonna 11-23-2009, 10:53 AM I know the feeling....I had to take the test with both of my girls just because everyone here does the test.....I had it with both girls. With Madyson I tried to control it with changing up my diet but it didnt work so I had to take insulin shots the last bit of pregnancy...with Emma I was bound and determined to not take shots so I was able to get it down....I felt like a human pin cushion....I was already taking Heprin with both pregnancies so with Mady I was giving my self like 4 shots a day.....They say women who have gestational diabetes are most likely going to have big babies...yea mine were 5 lbs 1 oz and 5 lbs 7 oz........But they have you stop eating at midnight the night before the test and then you have to drink that super sweet drink I had to to both tests with both girls....the 1 hr and the 3 hr....and when you go that long being preggers and nothing to eat I def got light headed.....glad to hear you are ok though
pasloma 11-23-2009, 11:38 AM Yup! I felt something similar ... it certainly is horrible and scary...
I am glad it wasn't serious... I mean... like you say... you didn't fall or anything... PTL!
hugs!
Paloma
