Hi,
My dd is 1.5 years old, and still uses a sippy cup. When is a good age to introduce a regular cup?

View Full Version : When Can They Start Using a Cup? MomFromCanada 01-01-2007, 06:41 PM Hi, My dd is 1.5 years old, and still uses a sippy cup. When is a good age to introduce a regular cup? SoapLady 01-02-2007, 06:40 AM I don't know when the best age is (big help, aren't I? ). DS never understood sucking out of a spillproof sippy cup so he just uses the kind with the spout and no valve in it. It might be a good transitional cup to try. I always give ds cups to play with in the tub before we use soap. He practices drinking without a lid and loves it. Last wk he wanted his cup without the lid so we tried it. He drank 3/4 without spilling a drop! (He wasn't that successful when he wasn't in his booster seat--too many distractions.) I think practicing in the tub helped him learn coordination, and no worries about cleaning up spills! :D kymommy 01-02-2007, 08:15 AM My daughter was around 1. She went right from the breast to the cup. My other daughter went from the breast to straw, then cup. A straw may be a good transition since your child can suck well. mamallama 01-02-2007, 09:34 AM My daughter had just turned three when she started drinking out of a cup with no lid. Honestly, if you don't mind spills, you can introduce the cup whenever you feel is right. But I think three is the ideal age because they have better hand/eye coordination. I still only let my dd drink in the kitchen and she will be four in about four months. justmeNmine 01-03-2007, 05:59 PM My DS (3) and DD (1) were able to use a straw around a year, and regular sippy cups. I start offering tiny amounts of milk or juice in a regular cup (to mine and othe rkids I have babysat) around 18 months and generally by two-ish, kids seem to be able to drink little bits from regular cups. I follow about the same timeframe for age-appropriate eating utensils. |
