I have had IBS (irritable bowel syndorme) since high school, but it is controlled by diet and extra fiber supplements. Well, in the past two weeks, not trying to be too graphic, I have had 3 bowel movements and they have not been easy to pass. I didn't have a vaginal birth the first time...but these movements have given me an idea of what it must be like to pass something so large out of something so small  It was never this bad with my first pregnancy.
I am drinking like a horse and am taking my fiber but am not having much success getting over this constipation. I usually try to have fruit every day and eat high fiber cereal at home, but it has been hit and miss while here with the in-laws. We go home on Tuesday, so it won't be too much longer before I am back on track. I am sure it has to do wioth me not being at home in my normal routine, but any other suggestions you ahve for me would be great.

Chellefish I had the same problem when I was pregnant with my dear son. I called my OB/GYN and he said to drink lots of water and eats lots of fruit and to take I think it was called Fibercon and to walk a lot. I started going every few days at that point but never went everyday like I really should have. Once I had ds the problem was over so I have no idea what caused it. Oh and let me add that my dr. said if that didn't solve the problem to call Roto Roter...hurt my feelings  .
And yes it is amazing how something so big can come out of such a tiny opening  . My ds was 9 lbs and 7 ozs when he was born  ...ouch is all I can say..and did I mention hemmoroids...oh my goodness did I have them and I think they hurt more than my other part did even after all the stitches I had there  ...hurts me to even talk about it.
Best of luck!

Fibercon is what I take everyday anyway and usually it helps. I have also been taking a stool softener okayed by my doctor most of the pregnancy.
Just being here and not eating like I am used to and the stress of not being at home and the different routines is hard. I worry about the hemoriods, too because of how I have had to work at these BM's...and I know that is not good, either, but sometimes your body just sort of takes over some functions :( This moring was a bit better, so I hope that I am over the hump of it for now.
It just does amaze me how different this pregnancy has been from the first.

I have always had a prob with being regular, got horrible when I was pregnant. My midwife gave me some samples of a prenatal with a stool softener in them, swore they would work, and nothing. I was lucky if I went twice a week.....
I then took matters into my own hand (after complaining and bringing it up several times at the office for those lovely routine visits), and started eating three times the recomended daily alotment of fiber (I ate a ton of kashi cereal, had the most fiber, but I felt like I was eating twigs and it was so bland), and drinking nearly 100 oz of water a day. When I told the midwife what I did to fix the problem, she told me to cut back on the fiber, as that could be binding when you already have a problem. Glad I didn't listen to her. It worked the way it was supposed to.
Sometimes, relaxing in a hot bath can help too. Did when I was a kid. Might be worth a shot, not just for this, but for a chance to relax a little.
Hope you get some relief and soon. I know how uncomfortable being so bound up can be.
