View Full Version : Your Favorite Cloth Diaper? Cover?
I'm looking at the Thirsties Duo Wrap covers with prefolds. I don't know why, but I don't like the AIO type, it doesn't appeal to me to have to WASH the WHOLE thing every time it's even wet. I like the idea of having a cover, cleaning it between wet diapers and then reusing it. Am I wrong in thinking that is the process? *THIS* seems to be a very affordable process, but I'm not sure.
After Wyatt is born I will have FOUR in diapers. Sheesh. The twins only wear something at *night* to keep me from having to wash an entire bed... it's just easier, but they are potty goers all through the day. Eliya will still be in diapers round the clock... and then a newborn. Oy.
So, I'm thinking, having them all in cloth would *probably* be more affordable. What do you guys think?? I'm searching here. Hub is NOT really open to cloth, simply because he doesn't think it would actually be savings... because of having to wash, dry and such. :-\ Anywho... let the opinions roll in! I'd love to hear what your favorite all time system is.
I'm looking for ladies who have tried more than just one brand; if you love Fuzzi bunz but it's all you've tried, that's not really too helpful... ya know? Anwho... thanks ladies!
kanaclark 10-29-2009, 07:35 PM we loved our covers and prefolds, and that's probably what Mr Bay will be in for his cloth moments. We're multi-users, and it just makes sense to us to use covers and prefolds.
and yes, you're right, you just wipe it off between pee's and wash it with bowel movements. :-)
some even swap covers out and just airdry every other one between changes. Urine is sterile, so it's not a issue of Hygeine.
Thanks Kana! I think I am pretty settled on the Thirsties for Wyatt, (four of them to alternate out), the Prowraps for Eliya and the twins (not so fancy, but they won't be wetting and pooing so much), the Indian prefolds, Bum Genius stay dry doublers, and the toilet sprayer thing. I'll probably just spray them in the bathroom, use a bucket to bring it downstairs and throw it in the washer and do a load everyday. That just seems like it would make the most sense for us. i'm still waiting for feedback on the brands I picked and for Hub's final say... he's in charge of finances, so this is really up to him. Guess we'll see... eh?

Oh Jen, I'm so glad you're looking into cloth! I just love it!!! :D
I know I'm a FTM, but I've been trying different styles and brands because I'm the kind of person that just needs to do it and know - plus, I can sell what we don't use! We have tried two different diaper covers with our PFs and a variety of pocket diapers.
Right now Gracie is primarily in prefolds and covers. And yes, that is what we do... after we change her we let the cover air dry if it was just wet, or we wipe it down if it is dingy or smelly. If it has poop on it, then we throw it in the pail with the dipe. :)
I really love the Thirsties covers. I bought a few XS covers and a few size 1 DuoWraps. In the future, I'll probably just buy the DuoWraps. They worked just as well as the XS and have lasted longer! She's still wearing them but just recently outgrew the XS.
We've also tried a OS Blueberry cover. It's super cute! However, I am not crazy about the fit on her. I still use it, but it's definitely not the first one I grab. We'll see how it continues to fit as she still wears it. It certainly will get a lot of use for it's price. (It was one of splurges [halo] )
We have really loved the PF/cover system a lot more than we thought. In fact, we're sticking with it even though we had planned on moving into pockets full time around this age. She still fits in them and they're simple. PLUS! It's not costing us more money! :D We do love that!
If you're interested in OS pockets at all, I have a variety of experience there too. In fact, we're trying a new kind just this week! :D We use the pockets at night. We've loved the BG 3.0s (bought most in EUC) and FuzziBunz most. But we're happy with Happy Heinys and Blueberry too. (We were given a variety of OS pockets for a shower gift! SO awesome!)
I hope that help as you go through all the info on CDing. I know it gets overwhelming, to say the least!! But it's soooo worth it!! And I think you would save money for sure! JMO! Here's to hoping DH will give the go.
ETA: Just for reference, Grace weighed 6lb, 14oz at birth and is now 12 lb, 13oz as of last week. She's been in the same dipes the whole time, minus the XS coves she *just* outgrew the last week or two!
Thanks Michelle~ Do you find that the BG's keep her dry at night or do you wind up having to change her many times because she's wet? That's the main thing I'm curious about. I've had few leaks with disp. and was wondering how cloth would differ for the "long haul"- over night, road trips and such. Thanks again!!
4HisGlory 10-29-2009, 10:02 PM I have tried a variety, pockets, aio. fitteds, and prefolds. I think prefolds for a newborn works well, but once they have a larger bladder, or even a boy with a stream of urine as they get older, I have found they soak right through. my 2 year old will soak his prefold after 1 pee. I like fitteds at that point. they have more layers and you still use a separate cover. for fitteds I had used mutts, under the nile, Kiwi, baby beehinds, and a few others, my favs are baby beehinds (I bought them all off diaperswappers) baby beehinds are bamboo and have a ton of layers[thumbsupgrin] I do enjoy fuzi bunz and aio just because they are simple ya know.
plaid 10-30-2009, 01:33 PM We use prefolds and have a couple thirsties covers. They work great. Ds is getting a bit bigger and I think I want to add a booster now. This combo works great for not leaking. It is wet against their skin so I try to change often and they are *really* wet. Weird at the beginning when you are used to disposables. At night you would need more than a prefold on an older child and if you wanted to go the whole night without changing on a little one. If your babe/child is a sensitive bum changer they might not sleep through the night in cloth. You can double up prefolds or add inserts or a booster. Fluffy bottoms! [claploud] I think you might want more than four covers for a newborn?? They seem to get poop on them often. :) I have really liked cloth diapering so far. Dh thinks I am nuts. :-D
melloyellochelle 10-30-2009, 01:57 PM Thanks Michelle~ Do you find that the BG's keep her dry at night or do you wind up having to change her many times because she's wet? The BG's do keep her dry if we put a doubler in there. It makes it pretty bulky, but since she's just sleeping and not playing it's not too big of a deal. Last night DH changed her diaper at 11 maybe (she had bad gas and wasn't sleeping on her own - otherwise we wouldn't have changed her dipe at that time) and she slept from 11:30pm until 11am in the same diaper (it's my morning to sleep in and DH was off to work, which meant poor little babe had to stay in her wet dipe - but she was sleeping the whole time!)!!! I wondered what "magic" combo DH had done! He actually had a PF on her and then used a regularly stuffed pocket! No leaks! WOOHOO!
I think cloth definitely works in "long haul" situations. It's just a matter of finding the right combos for a) your budget, b) your babe's wetness factor, and c) what systems you're using. Some use the fitteds and love those for long hauls (as PP said). We just haven't ventured there... yet!
:-D Hope that helps Jen!

For Gracie, we had maybe 5? One we hardly reach for and use and the other 4 got great use out of them but we never ran out of clean ones. Especially if Jen is planning to do laundry everyday, I would think it would be OK. The fold of the PF makes a big difference too! We loooove the "bikini twist" fold! Helps hold in all that lovely BF poop! [claploud] That's just my experience though. :)
And I'm with ya! We really like cloth too! Our families think we're nuts. It's true though. We are! [lovesmile]

for ds, I was a bikini twist mama too! However with dd I found it didn't hold in her EXPLOSIVE poos (which is anytime she poos) So I now do the jelly roll for her and haven't had any problems! I am suprised to hear that everyone had so many covers! I usually only have 2 per size. I only use 1 and then if that one needs to be cleaned I use the other while it is being washed/dryed. I also *JUST* started using PLU covers (mothers ease) I always used wool before. I only switched because I find toddler pants to not have so much fluffy butt room.
