View Full Version : Castor oil ?'s
ChamomileFriend 10-07-2009, 12:10 PM I noticed a few of you ladies mentioned you've used this to get things moving - I bought some yesterday but am nervous about trying it bec I am afraid it will make me sick. I have a pretty sensitive tummy.
How much did you all use when you used it? Did it make you feel sick/queasy at all? Also, and probably tmi, but does it give you the runs or is it just a regular bm?
Ashlee 10-07-2009, 12:24 PM I don't know from experience but I think it *can* make you quite sick and give you the runs. I have heard sooo many horror stories. I was always way to scared to try it!
savedbygrace 10-07-2009, 12:28 PM First, be careful using CO.
What it does is causes you to cramp and have a BM. Those same cramps will cause a contraction and can help kick start things.
I don't suggest doing it at night, because then you may be up all night with contractions and having to go to the bathroom and then when real labor starts you'll be exausted.
What I did, was take 2 table spoons mixed it with juice and downed it as fast as I could. it took about 4 hours for it to kick in and cause BM, and yes it loose not firm. With Joey, it didn't do much for me so 6 hours later I took it again. same method and it worked. It kick started my labor and I believe those contractions helped me to dialate.
However, if your baby isn't ready and your cervix isn't ready, it won't work.
My experience was as follows:
Took about two to four ounces (I think- this was with Helen-DD2) in OJ... about threw up. Something about the taste made me gag. I know a LOT of women who say the taste doesn't bother them though. I believe it was within the hour that I had the runs.... and that lasted all afternoon/evening. My midwife also stripped my membranes (without my knowledge) and I still went another week. ::shrugs:: I don't know if any of it did anything.
I tried the CO with Eliya and could hardly get any of it down... so nothing much happened. ::shrugs:: I tried EVVERYTHING. Even Eggplant Parmesan. Nada. Zilch. So... I think if you do those things and something happens... it was very obviously *time*. Ya know? But there are a LOT of women who swear by this stuff... soo... everyone is different. It might just work for you!
I can't believe how many of you there are that are coming to the finish line! :)
ChamomileFriend 10-07-2009, 02:36 PM If I do have any I will probably have the teeniest tiniest spoonful. I feel like I am sooooooooooo ready - I am huge and she is just headbutting the bajinkies out of my cervix all the time - that has to count for something, right? And the swelling and even the easiest housework seems like such a major production now. Of course I would rather try um, other ways of getting things started but I dunno if that is going to happen, can pray that it will, though  There are always happy surprises around every corner.
Sorry to say but this baby has been headbutting my cervix for about 3wks and I'm still here  I hope your baby's headbutting works though, I think mine just likes to torture me...LOL. I wouldn't try the caster oil as I really don't want the runs. I poop extra when I'm in labor so I'm definately not wanting to add more pooping to the pooping that I already do. Sorry if that's TMI....LOL.
Cham- I must suggest to either go all the way or nothing at all. With eliya I got just enough down that I got the taste and nastiness... but no effects... and I didn't want to drink more because I hated the taste. If you want to see if it will do anything... I'd do at least what Esther does the 2 TBLSP, or 2 oz as I've seen on multiple websites now. I'm watching ya for some exciting news gal! :)
~Tara~ 10-07-2009, 05:28 PM I would NOT do the co. Not worth it in my opinion. Yeah, like I wanna feel THAT kind of crappy (no pun intended) during labor! Diarrhea kind of stomach cramps and throwing up on top of labor?? No thanks.
Just be patient sweetheart. I know that's easier said than done at this point, but really, co just isn't worth it, imo.
melloyellochelle 10-07-2009, 10:48 PM Well, I did use CO and it seemed to really help. But I also spent along time walking that night, so that definitely helped. But here is what I did and how it went down:
I took the amount instructed on the bottle in OJ. I drank it fast so I don't remember the taste. I did take it at night, although not sure I would recommend that as PP said. So I took it around 11. I woke up around 3 with cramps. Went to the bathroom (runs) and I was back and forth to the bathroom for a 1/2 hour. When I felt the cramping progressing (stronger and frequent) I woke DH up. It *did* make my tummy hurt and I was also throwing up. :( Although, I could just respond to labor that way as my tummy is sensitive to things like that in general. Anyway, by the time we got to the hospital at 6/6:30 I was 5cm and 100%. And I had nothing left in me to keep coming out so I didn't worry about the whole pooping while laboring and deliverying thing. I liked that about it, to be honest. :) I was ready to push by 11am and she was born at 1:00!
I do recommend it if you're past or at your due date and your body is feeling ready. And I'd just do the whole dose and be done with it. It'll go through your body fairly quickly and you'll either start laboring and thinking of something else :) or you'll clear your insides and know your body isn't ready yet.
I hope that helps! :D
danou 10-08-2009, 04:29 AM Hi girls- I will add my two cents. Stay away from CO! Too much of a dose can cause cramping, diarreah (sp?), and even dehydration, not to mention exhaustion from being on the can for several hours consecutively. Your baby will come when it's ready. TRUST!
If you're facing a medical induction there are herbal options available. But I encourage you to hunker down and wait it out. Hang in there- :)d
savedbygrace 10-08-2009, 05:01 PM Oh yeah, If you do try to do the CO. you gotta do it all the way. But it is very important to stay hydrated. Any time you have the runs or throwing up you want to make sure you're hydrated. I couldn't stand the texture of it if anything, and again if your baby isn't ready, it just aint gonna work!
the other thing that it can cause is baby to have a BM in utero. so that is another reason people don't suggest doing it. Before you do anything, research it first! Then of course pray.:-D
ChamomileFriend 10-08-2009, 07:23 PM Hi! Got back from the midwife's office today - she recommended I use evening primrose oil instead, so I will try to pick up some of that. I am also drinking some red raspberry leaf tea tonite - I picked some up a while ago but always forget to drink it! I will try to have a little everyday now and after the baby is born, too. I know the tea will not start labor and really the oil probably won't either but if they help get my body ready that is ok, too.
I did have some contractions this morning and a few in the afternoon, but nothing super regular - yet! I am already measuring @ 40 wks so we will see if this baby turns out to be a 9 lb'er or not and if she comes in the next week or will stubbornly stay beyond that.
Ahhh... duh... yeah! I forgot about EPO! I used that late in pregnancy too! And my cervix was NOT the problem, that's for sure! ::snort:: It did help to get things ready, that's for sure~ I can't wait! This is so exciting!
krazee4jc 10-18-2009, 04:34 PM I remember my friends telling me to use castro oil for my 1st. I didn't do it [halo] My OBGYN actually suggested me to put warm water balloons on my breast 2weeks before due date every evening. I was scared at 1st :???: but did it MY RACHEL CAME 3 DAYS EARLY :-D
buttercup_97140 10-18-2009, 06:53 PM Hey gal,
I talked to my midwife extensively about CO. She said it will NOT cause baby to have BM in utero, that was my biggest fear. She said take two tablespoons and see what happens. It does give you the runs, but that's the point. If your intestines are aggravated, it will cause your uterus to be too. Ever notice that many women have the runs naturally shortly before labor starts?
I took CO once a day for four days, and although i had contractions, labor never started. It just wasn't Makelah's time. I even walked, and walked, and walked.
The nice thing about CO is that you don't have the runs for a long period of time. I only had one, maaaybe two times on the toilet, and then felt fine. Contractions usually started an hour or so after I went to the potty.
I had a friend who was induced around 39 weeks by a midwife using CO. She gave her multiple doses over a day, but she was monitored.
My neighbor asked me for some CO when she was done being pg...LOL. She took a small amount and had her baby about 10 hours later....I couldn't believe it!
I hope you meet your sweet baby soon!!
Blessings,
Amber
