View Full Version : My three year old's fears...
Okay... this is kind of a strange post... my three year old, who is braver than any kid i know, is afraid of really silly things... like... ladybugs, our new puppy, her hands being dirty and other silly stuff like that. This is the same kid that will try anything new, be it a food, or a ride or anything like that... she has punched bigger kids in the face/neck to have a toy... (yes, I know it's horrible)... and is such a brave "go getter" of a little kid... I just don't get these unreasonable little fears!
Anyone have any advice or a similar experience to share?? :D
RhysMom 12-20-2006, 02:47 PM Okay, I am afraid of my hands being dirty...germs...ewww! I don't know why these things bother her. She might be afraid of the ladybug and the puppy because they are new to her and obviously alive. She understands the concept of people so "interacting" with other children isn't a big deal for her. The puppy might just take getting used to. I would suggest that as long as you are calm and show no fear then she should warm up. As for the dirt, be grateful that you won't have a bunch of horrible laundry
because your child wants to roll in mud! :D
Good Luck!

breezykc2 12-20-2006, 03:14 PM In big and newly exiting situations, adrenaline kicks in too and can make it easier to try new things with this extra kick running through their veins...sometimes it's the little things that are harder because they are more "real" to us or they're not exciting enough to get us over the "this is worth the danger for the coolness" hump!
I have a two and a half year old little boy...and fearless is his middle name! He puts the fear of God in my soul somedays as he leaps and climbs and bounds towards and through dangerous things!
Then there are those times when he sees a worm and freaks out, or won't touch the clay putty because it feel weird and starts sobbing, or hears a loud noise from a car outside and runs saying he's scared of the car!...these times, I simply stick my hands in the putty too and show him it's okay, or show him the car out of the window and tell him what we use cars for and make car noises with him....basically, reaffirm what he's feeling, comfort the fear, and try and educate at the same time....Good luck!
I've been trying to take this incredibly slow... and just letting her be afraid of him... all the while picking the puppy up... maybe taking it over *nearish* to her, and sitting on the floor while I pet, cuddle and kiss on him...
Today we made serious progress! While doing this, she came over, while he was laying down on me, and started to rub his head and was saying, "Good boy! Good puppy!" It was really sweet! So, patience prevailed!!! :) Thanks ladies!
mamallama 12-20-2006, 05:33 PM I think it is just a phase honestly. I can remember when my daughter, who is three also, was that way. It was back in the summer and she seemed frightened of things that she once had no fear of. (ie: bugs, my parents' dogs, etc.) I think that RysMom offered good advice:

As long as you show her there is nothing to be frightened of, she will soon come to realize that everything is okay. HTHS. :)

Ditto.. I have a 3 yr old DS and he is fearless, just like his daddy. Helps me to remember who is in control..! Anyway he has a fear of DEER~ what ? We live in the middle the country, but for some reason he fears deer. I just tell him that they live outside and won't come in the house. I think he will hopefully grow out of that!!
Timmys mom 12-21-2006, 09:33 AM My son is afraid of dogs and spiders. (I think it is the fact that they're alive.) He's also a little afraid of the dark. He only started that when he watched curious george though. In one episode they were trying to help the monkey not be afraid in the dark. But I think that put the idea in Timmy's head that dark was scary. I wish he'd never watched that.
Cheeseburger 12-21-2006, 05:31 PM You all have it good - my SIL's 3 year old is afraid of the TOILET, LOL... he's afraid he will get sucked down with the water - as a result he's still in diapers
they are trying to potty train him now but he's afraid to go by himself
I asked him one day how potty training was going and he said the toilet hadn't got him yet rofl
my SIL is [whatheadagainstthewall] with that one
i think maybe one of his older siblings must have scared him about the toilet at some point??

lol i've experienced something like that before.....
my oldest dd was afraid of the toilet too....our toilet made a weird noise when you flushed it when our pipes were cold and my sister was over and told her one day it was a monster in the toilet. she wouldn't use the bathroom by herself for long time.
