I am planning on sending this letter to our daughter's Honors English Teacher...? Any imput? Frustrated.
________________________________________
For 9th grade 14 yr. olds? 'Beowulf' & 'The Great Gatsby'.
What?! Affairs, sex, death, fear, hanging body parts, demons, revenge, glory in killing, decapitation, hopelessness, murder, suicide, dying dreams...
Are there regulations for rating books by age appropriate titles? I will research this.
What about hope, overcoming adversity, joy, and getting through the challenges of life with dedication to God, community, family, and self? Giving of self to help others, getting through true trials, grief, sadness, overcoming adversity. Creative imagination, getting through the darker side of things; abuse, broken families, adoption, surviving death or dying loved ones.... Something to give teens hope in their future?

I am very disappointed in these choices of books for the Honors English class. We are a conservative Christian family, and acknowledge that we have the right for our daughter to have an education that does not jeopardize our religious rights and beliefs. What other book options do we have for those that have religious / family values against such teachings?

 If this were my child...I would refuse to let her read it! I would insist the teacher have an alternate book I approved of.( I'd even let my child take a zero if need be) Even if you weren't Christian...no 14yr old should be exposed to that kind of gore.

That is a great letter and I agree completely with pioneerchristianmomof3. I am struggling with terrible reading choices for my daughter in the 6th grade! Nice to see that I am not the only one!
