About how old can you expect a baby's first words to come out? I mean...more than just making sounds? Madison has been sounding like she's saying, "Mama" and everyone thinks that she is...but I don't want to be a fool thinking that she is when all she's doing is making noises...thoughts??

Gracie first said "mama" at four months. Jon was a bit older, I think. :)

:D YAY!! I wasn't sure...'cause I know another mom who claimed that her son was saying "hey" at 1 month... not true...just making sounds...but I didn't want to seem stupid for thinking that she was saying it....she looked right at me the other day and said it....didn't seem like she was just chattering...but I wasn't sure!

All kids mature at different rates... my oldest niece was speaking full on sentences at 9 months, but her younger brother is now only starting to make sentences at almost 2, and didn't say his first word til like 10 months.

Katherine sometimes says "mum" when she is really upset and trying to get my attention w/ crying. She has not ever said it when she is calm though LOL. I really do think she is trying to get my attention because she will be crying "muuuum, muuuuuum" and then i walk in and she is like "mum! mum!" all frantic. DH is always refering to me as "mum" when talking to the baby, so it makes sense she would say that.

Otherwise it is just a lot of grunts, growls and high-pitched squeals around here LOL

I think sometimes babies CAN talk, they just don't... and some babies have more to say than others LOL

well, I swear my eldest, at 4 months said "Rich!" as he called to/looked at his Uncle Richard (whom only I called Rich and who called himself 'uncie rich'

at around the 6 month mark they've all said 'mama' and/or 'dada' and what sounds like 'good'

I'd say she's really sayin' it Chels. Pay attention to when she says it...is she with you? Is she looking for you? ;)

yeah, I've been trying to watch for when she says it and if there's any pattern or anything. She repeats "Mamamamama" when she's really upset...but there are times when she's calm and happy as could be and she says, "Mama". The other day I was doing the dishes and she was in her seat and I turned around to say something to her and she just smiled at me and said it. She was at her Nannie's and she told me that Maddy kept on saying it...I just don't want to sound stupid for something that's not really happening....but I think it is!

ITA that she is probably saying "mama." My daughter sounded like she was saying things early on too, around 4-6 months old. Since 6-9 months, she has been trying to mimic everything. Now at 11 months, she clearly says hi, bye-bye, love, no-no, more, etc. and she sings
(la-la-la); it really is amazing! My son was so quiet and reserved and sheis just so social and vocal. I love it and always repeat sounds that she makes, cause she does a lot of that too!

Tory is a little over 7 months, and she babbles Da-da and Ma-ma, but I don't think she gets what she's saying yet. That being said, however, I think she's like her older sister. Audrey was super-quick to develop gross motor skills (like walking at nine months) but has been slower at speech development than other kids. (She only just started using verbs at 27 months.)

So, if your DD is acting like she knows what it means, I'd say she's saying it 'for real'. It's really amazing how differently the little ones develop. It all evens out, eventually. I have a friend whose daughter was 14 months before she walked, but who can still talk circles around Audrey. But, I think Audrey could still outrun her, lol.
