View Full Version : anyone else foregoing a crib?

Am I normal for not "wanting" a crib, but wanting to get a pack and play type thing for this baby? I know you can buy the 3-in-1 type beds, but I don't want to pick the bed until we know the kid, does that make sense? I mean, what if we buy this elegant sleigh type crib that turns into a beautiful full sized sleigh bed, only to have a boy or a girl who is a tom-boy and would be better off with a solid oak 'timber' type bed?

Or what if we pick a more plain "mission" style to have this kid who like the "nicer things in life"? I mean a bed is a bed, but when you're a kid, your room is the one thing you have that reflects YOU, ya know? I don't want a teenager who's personality is one type to have a bed that reflects the total opposite b/c "mama thought it was perfect 16 years ago". Joy, I know you get this, right???????

So am I crazy for just getting the pack and play with the built in bassinet for the early days, but turns into a regular "play pen" later. Brian said he figures the kid will be in our bed for the first couple months, so he couldn't care less. LOL.

Just someone tell me I'm not crazy, cuz y'all, when I told my cousin that, she looked at me like I had three heads or something. ????!?!?!?!?!?

My sister didn't with two of her kids. She used the pack n play for the first bit, and then believe it or not, she started putting them on a crib mattress on the floor by the time they were 6 months. Neither of her girls ever saw the inside of a crib. I also had some friends who used just a pack n play for lack of space when they lived in a tiny apt.

We had one of those pack-n-plays that had the bassinet, it worked for the first month or so, we used it right next to our bed. We didn't care for the bassinet part much after that cause every time he'd move it'd sway and wake him.

We also had his crib set up in his bedroom which he was sleeping in by 3 months. We're not a big fan of baby in our bed here (just our choice, nothing against those co-sleeper here ;) ) and I wouldn't forgo a crib unless I absolutely had to.

If you know this babe will be joining you in your bed then a crib really isn't necessary. (Payton never liked being in our bed the couple times we tried, he always slept better on his own). I think it's personal preference. If you decide you want one later, get one that doesn't convert then you don't have to worry about the bed part. You can always change out/upgrade beds later. :)

I think you're thinking way too much LOL

I don't use cribs. Or toddler beds. And my kids are lucky to have more than springs and mattress on a frame by the time they are in a twin bed. Mine only have what they have now because we had a big tax return several years ago and went all out.

Jessy,
the P&P we're looking at has a fullsize bassinet, so it's not the "half" size on. it's the same size as the regular bottom bed, just raised.

Patrick never slept in his crib, he was always in the p&p, but he *had* one. LOL

yeah, T, that's what I think Brian is thinking, too. :-)

That's exactly how ours was too! It's a pack n play, full sized bassinet w/a changing station you can attach.

My boys both used a crib by the time they were 6 weeks, in hand me down bassinet (has had over 22 grandkids in it thru the years!) until that point. I'm not a cosleeper type at all....so cribs worked for us.

Do what works for you...who cares what others say!

We've done pretty much all of the above~ ::snort:: Different reasons for each~ :) We've co-slept for the first year, pack-n-play in our room for almost the whole first year, cribs, toddler beds... every child is different and has different needs... and *you* are different for each pregnancy/child and have different needs~ ::snort:: At least that's been the case for *me* personally~ :)

Katherine's still sleeping in her ridiculously expensive crib that was a gift from the in-laws as a baby shower gift.

Nathaniel never got a crib. He's been in the playpen from day 1. LOL.

Katherine can now climb in and out of her crib (a recent development), so we are going to switch nathaniel to the crib and have to upgrade her to a twin soon.

I really wouldn't worry about it... heck, if I didn't have a crib/playpen, my kids can sleep on the floor. Notably, I slept on the floor for about 4-5 years as a teen (also went without a shower or bath, but that's a long story.)

We've run the gamut here too. We've used pack 'n plays with bassinet attachments, heirloom cradles for two, cribs, and toddler beds. I had one infant who absolutely insisted on sleeping in her carseat for several months (she had reflux). I say go for whatever works and fits your budget.

If she/he's going to be right by you a lot you could even look at a moses basket. I have some friends who went that route and loved it. So portable.
