...about your city/state/country

My recent trivia question inspired me on this one.

Let's share interesting tid bits about where we live. There's so many interesting little pieces of info. or history about our country/world out there and I'd like to learn them.

For those of you who don't want to disclose your location, feel free to share an interesting fact about a special place.

I know, I'm corny! :D

If you don't know were Toronto is, we're on Lake Ontario (walking distance). Part of it, on the edge of downtown, they want to invest in to change it and make it more exciting. We may know what the plan will be by summer. History: most of the land on the water front used to be water, they filled it in. The locals had been using it as a dumping ground for waste, dead livestock, etc., before having a nice "Waterfront" ever became an issue.
I'm closer to what they call the Beach or the Beaches, depending on who you ask. I like my area better anyway b/c it's usually quieter.

I am in what some poeple call the "armpit" :P of Iowa or some even say the "penis" of Iowa....I am in the southeastern-most corner of the state where the Mississippi river runs East to West instead of North to South and then bends back to N and S...thus creating an armpit and then a little "Souther" than me the state hangs down between Illinois and Missouri like a penis.

Not far from my city is a replica of the very first school that was started West of the Mississippi, Galland School.

In my town, there is a cemetery where daughers and granddaughters of Betsy Ross are buried.

My town is 7 miles long and 1 mile wide.

The school district I teach in in the 5th largest bussing district in the state of Iowa.

During the summer, we can visit various towns and cities to attend the following festivals: Sweetcorn Days, Watermelon Festival, Strawberry Days, Apple Days and the Grape Festival.

Missouri is the #1 state in the country for Meth! Wohoo! LOL! St. Louis is the headquarters of companies such as Aniseur Busch (Budwieser), Edward Jones, Engergizer (the battery), and Boeing (the air plane makers). St. Louis has the largest Bosnian community in the U.S. John Goodman, Chuck Berry, Cheryl Crow, Tina Turner, Noah Wiley, and Nelly are all from St. Louis. Are famous Arch was built in the 60's as a symble of westward expansion. St. Louis was the first U.S. city to host a Worlds Fair and Olympics. The hotdog and ice cream cone where created in St. Louis at the 1904 Worlds Fair.

There was a Bonnie and Clyde shootout here in Joplin, MO (most don't know about it). .

There was a Civil War battle fought over by Carthage MO (aobut 20 minutes from here), before the first Battle of Bull Run.

The George Washington Carver Museum is close by.

We have a lot of trucking companies in town because we are very close to being in the center of the US.

If you took a drive and made a loop south and then came west and then north, you could hit Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas all within an hour and then be back in Missouri.

Canton, MS is called the "City of Lights, Camera, and Action." That's because alot of movies are filmed here, since it is that quaint little southern town described in alot of the movies. There is almost always a movie star, film producer or other famous hoytie toytie poking around town. Some of the kids in my daughters school have houses in the movies as well, did you know that when Hollywood needs a real location, they will not only pay the owners to use it, but actually remodel, or renovate the house, store, building, etc back to its original state? There are also a lot of the locals in the movies as extras. Some of the movies filmed here are:
My Dog Skip with Freddie Munez(most of the boys in my dd's class are the baseball team)
Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou with George Clooney(my bank, the town square, and court house)
Time to Kill, the John Grisham movie with Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey.
There is always some PBS show or documentary being filmed up there as well. Its a neat little town to live in, if it weren't for all the cars going around the square, you would think you had gone back in time 200 years.
People still actually walk to the grocery store and church!

I live in Glassboro NJ. We are known for a few things

!. About a 100 years ago or so, we used to have a big glass bottle
factory. Milk bottles and medicine bottles and other glass bottles.
Hence the name Glassboro!

2. We are home to Rowan University. (Used to be Glassboro State)
Than about 7 years ago. Some rich guy donated over 50 million
and you guessed it his name was Rowan. Hence Rowan University.

3. And that brings us to the college which in 1966 was still Glassboro
State. It was in the middle of the cold war. The head of Russia was
in New York City and President Johnson was in Washington DC and
neither one would budge and go to the other city. So you guessed it
Glassboro is the half way point between NY City and Washington DC.
So they met here. At the Whitney Masion on the grounds of Glassboro
State. We were nicked named the Summit City for many years after.

4. In the 80's we also had President Reagan come and hand out
diplomias at the Glassboro High School graduation.

Just a few neat things about Glassboro! :D

Oh I thought of something...I'm 30min from Oakman where the F-4 Tornado struck down in 1999 and took out the middle school..Technically I'm in tornado alley but Carbon Hill and Oakman always get the worst of it

Also home of the triple murder and man hunt that was aired all over the news a few years back..lost my pastor in that and personally knew the killer...small towns

Thats about it...not much happens around here..

The majority of the people in Peterhead, Scotland speak a language called Doric. There are the ruins of a 800 year old church. There are ruins of 2 castles in Peterhead. There is a castle that is said to be Bram Stoker's inspiration for the dracula castle. That's all I can think of right now.

Can't tell you much about NM since I've only been here a little over 5 yrs (though Aztec does have a sign that says it was voted as "The Friendliest City in the US in 1965"....
But in the Milwaukee, WI area that I grew up in, there's an ice cream drive-in that they based "Happy Days" on...

Michigan has one of the highest unemployment rates out of the 50 states. It's second only to Alaska.
