View Full Version : What's in YOUR diaper bag? BlessedMommy 12-04-2006, 05:11 PM It seems like I pack half my house when I take my baby somewhere. I need to start cutting back. So I wanted to just ask you all: what items do you usally keep in your diaper bag? Cheeseburger 12-04-2006, 06:18 PM lol no help here: at least 10 diapers, lots of baby wipes... we used to pack 4 extra outfits but after our escapade at the city this week with all the puking, we are going to start packing more outfits, extra jackets, hats, booties etc. Usually 5-7 receiving blankets, 2 baby blankets for covering while feeding, washcloths, baby lotion, baby soap (usually tiny sample jars or bottles), tiny jar of rash cream, a tube of vaseline,.. laundry bag... diaper tote... toys... stash extra snowsuit in the car... lots of extra nursing pads, extra bra and shirt for mom (mine sometimes get ruined with leaky milk while feeding, if I don't bring extras then I smell like sour milk all day LOL)... plastic change pad... waterproof cloth pads... if dad is coming he gets an extra shirt too (we've had our shirts ruined before and had to walk around stinky from spit-up ALL DAY LOL it was so gross) ...and a bottle of water for mom :) Hey breastfeeding makes me thirsty. now that's she's eating solids, if we are gone for a whole day, we will have to start packing food and spoons If i decide "oh, I won't need that today" I always end up needing it... We got this huge diaper bag from SIL that she's not using anymore... I thought it would be too big so I was going to buy a tiny one. Turns out that I was wrong, and it's not big ENOUGH. lol I can't imagine what i'd do if I had to tote along formula too. MomFromCanada 12-04-2006, 06:23 PM My dd is now 20 months almost, so we have cut back a bit on what we used to bring. We used to have the whole gammot too of receiving blankets, etc. but now we bring between 3-5 diapers, wipes, baby powder, some toys for reading in the car and her play purse with toys in it to keep her occupied while shopping, also sippy cup and snacks. That is about it for now! When she was younger we used to carry a lot more, e.g. extra change of clothing, etc. Eva 12-04-2006, 06:45 PM Everything baby related EXCEPT bibs :? I always forget bibs and end up spilling food on her clothes! I blame it on mommy brain. Cheeseburger 12-04-2006, 06:49 PM EvaS thanks for the reminder, that's another thing we'll need to pack when we pack food for her. Bibs. :? BlessedMommy 12-04-2006, 06:58 PM Wow! That's a lot of stuff, Nichole. :) Currently in my diaper bag there is: 1) 8 Fuzzi Bunz 2) A ziploc bag of wet washcloths 3) A nursing cover 4) Water, lotion, and hairbrush for mom 5) A wetbag tote for dirty diapers 6) A rubberized changing pad 7) An extra outfit for her 8) And probably a few other things that I can't think of right now! Yeah, Nichole, I second the fact that I'm thankful that I don't have to pack formula and bottles too! :) BlessedMommy 12-04-2006, 07:00 PM Actually I think that I might keep an "overflow" box in the car with extra diapers, wipes, some extra outfits and blankets, etc. Then if disaster strikes, I'm prepared but I don't have to pack it all in my diaper bag. Godzgirl 12-04-2006, 07:04 PM basically what you ladies have mentioned is what i have had in my diaper bags. I don't think their is any other way around it. The load does get lighter as the baby grows older. love2bmom 12-04-2006, 09:42 PM I have everything but the kitchen sink.... I actually carry two. One is for quick trips the other is for longer times. Quick Bag 4 diapers - I only have to carry for DD now & not DS YAY YIPPEE!! Bag....wet wipes, diapers, a few snack items, kiddie silverware, and a small baggie wtih basic med supplies if needed.....when there's a baby, add formula....always an extra binkie and cup or bottle that's fresh when we leave the house..... love2bmom 12-04-2006, 09:51 PM OOOps... forgot to mention I also keep a Longaberger Market basket filled with kids stuff/toys in the back of the truck.. I have to get control.. harmony5 12-04-2006, 10:51 PM Since Preston is almost 2, we have a little tiny bookbag for a diaper bag that I have also started doubling as my "purse". So, these days, all we carry are enough diapers for the outing (depending on how long we're going to be out), travel case of baby wipes, a snack or two, one sippy cup, a big water bottle of juice (for refills), one extra outfit, my wallet, my cell phone and my keys. Every once in a while, I will bring a book or toy depending on where we are going. But that's about it for me. When the baby comes, I know it'll be a whole different story!! But then again, I don't plan on getting out much, so maybe when I do have to pack one, it won't be too bad. Lori :D Godzgirl 12-04-2006, 11:16 PM Yeah, i also forgot to mention that depending how long i know i'm going to be out i have a back up bag with a lot of extra clothes and blankets for both my baby boy and little gal. Has helped alot during those little "accidents". ~Tara~ 12-05-2006, 09:27 AM I don't like diaper bags. I use a modest sized purse that serves double duty. In that I have: 1 diaper travel wipes my billfold a half dozen ink pens :) (I have little thieves ;) ) germ x teething tablets my Burt's Bees lip balm a baby toy/teether In the truck I keep 2 more diapers and extra undies for the 2yo. That's everything :D mamallama 12-05-2006, 09:55 AM Okay, I don't use a diaper bag anymore...I am using a purse right now, but I'm thinking about switching to a book bag. BUT I know if I do then it will just be an open invitation to throw more stuff in there! LOL That's why I stick to a purse. Here's what I have in there right now: -notebook and pen -coupon book -checkbook -wallet -cell phone case -small brush with built-in mirror -small makeup bag with lotion, hair scrunchies for me and dd, 2 lipglosses, gum, candy lol) -WIC folder -dd's princess watch -another notebook -extra batteries for when I carry my digital camera -pad -ziplock baggie with emergency items such as: bandaids, tissues, meds, chapstick... -trash  Usually I also have a diaper and a sippie cup for ds in there. This is a medium sized purse, I promise...just sounds like a lot. ETA: I also carry extra diapers and a bag of toys for the kids in the van. EATA )edited again to add): LOL We also keep a seperate insulated bag in the van with snacks and water. justmeNmine 12-05-2006, 11:44 AM I keep the same bag packed most of the time... It's pretty simple: 2-3 diapers ziplock bag of wipes can of formula bottle of water change of clothes for baby undies/sweatpants for 3yo (I used to keep a receiving blanket when my daughter was really small) IF one of them is sick, I throw the tylenol, cold medicine, orajel, etc. uinto the front pouch. If we go somewhere with a long wait or something, my 3yo brings his own little bookbag of toys/books. kanaclark 12-05-2006, 01:18 PM we have this: 2 diaper covers and about 10 prefolds (plus two or three sposies in each size. (they're in the same size cover) wipes sippy cup and bottle two blankets (identicals, Bri steals) bottle of water and bottle of juice formula mix two changes of clothes for each one *sometimes an extra shirt for me that's it. I used to keep a box in the car, too, Ruth. it's makes leaving in a hury super easy that way. JoyLynn 12-05-2006, 01:54 PM Heehee, it's been awhile for me but I still remember what was always in my diaper bags. I'm not much of an over packer... 4-8 diapers (depending on outing) 2 burp cloths B. powder Desitin plastic bag 2-4 bottles 2 pacies (depending on baby) our blankies went with baby in car seat or carrier, and if we were going to be gone for awhile we'd bring a little gift bag along with a few toys in it. [heartbeat] Joy [welcomewave] Crissyanna 12-05-2006, 02:54 PM For our about town bag (quick no more than three hours out trips) Diapers, normally four. Extra cover (I've been using vinyl, easy to wipe out wet) Wal-Mart sacks for dirty diapers (figured, hey, resuse them) A few sposies for the odd emergency Rash ointment burp rags baby brush and comb baby wipes soap (sample ones that came in mail) a few rattley toys normally 2 extra outfits, sometimes more extra socks a hat The checkbook pens coupons portait smiles card (so I have it when we finally get the pics done that are overdue) dr. appt notice card vax record (however, I doubt that one after tomorrow.....) and if we are going to be gone to some friend's for a few hours, I throw in the gas drops (she always gets that at very inconvient times for mom) My cell phone UB (a very ugly bug toy I found on clearance for 75 cents at wal-mart that crinkles and has a bell rattle in it. She loves it. I called it her Ugly Bug, but decided I didn't want her learning the word ugly too early in her life, so it is UB. Which she'll be able to say before ugly anyway) We have a huge diaper bag we take for longer trips, normally overnights. The blankets go in the car seat with her right now, including the huge receiving blankets I use for a nursing cover. I think that is pretty much it. The diaper bag has become my purse. Guess it is a good thing I always carried around HUGE purses before now! This way I am used to a large diaper bag. Now, to just remember to pack myself extra clothes.....I never do. You'd think I would have learned that one by now..... buttercup_97140 12-05-2006, 03:03 PM What's a diaper bag? LOL! We are blessed if we rememer to bring along an extra diaper...thank goodness for ones that fall out of diaper bag when we remember to bring it! I have been a little better with remembering it, and right now I think there are a few extra diapers, a package of wipes from Costco ( love that they have a flap that keeps them moist) maybe another onsie.....hmmm, is that it? I am trying to remember to stash a few snacks for DD, she is 15 months so we need to keep her fed...LOL! I think I may pack another jacket since she threw up on the only one we had yesterday, but really we don't seem to need the whole house. She usually does well with what she has on, and she eats what we eat mostly, so unless we are going to be gone for a while, we really don't think about it too much. I can say that we are blessed with friends who have babies around the same size as DD so we can steal diapers from them, since we are usually around our friends a lot of the time we go out! Lots of help huh? LOL Amber Kensbev 12-05-2006, 09:00 PM Wow... and I thought my doctor was joking when she said I packed light for a mom with 2, lol. For DD #1, we've got a couple of diapers (we're still waiting for the cloth to come, so they're disposable), a box of juice and an empty sippy cup. If she needs a snack, I can usually grab a banana or something while we're out. For DD#2, we have a couple of diapers, a poncho for cover-up while nursing, a receiving blanket for messy moments (i.e. clean up after bfing), an extra outfit, and a bottle of baby tylenol. Oh, and a single wipes container for the both of them. I was thinking of trading that in for a couple of washcloths, though. I love using them instead of wipes! If I know it'll just be a quick trip to the store or something, I'll just take a straw. That way, if DD #1 needs some milk or something like that, we're equipped to give it to her. (She's still not dealing well with drinking without spilling it all over the front of her shirt.) We have extra dipes in the car if there's a diaper emergency. |
