View Full Version : diaper rash and UTI?!
PianoMama 07-19-2009, 09:28 PM I've been using organic coconut oil in DD's diaper rash now for 3 days with no change. It's fairly bad and now I think she has a UTI...she cries suddenly, I'm guessing when she urinates...help!
I've tried A&D, Burt's Bees diaper cream and then the coconut oil...
I'm thinking of looking for antibiotic cream and 100% cranberry juice.
His butterfly 07-20-2009, 12:44 AM Is the rash all blistery and pus-filled. If so it could be a staph infection and she would need an antibiotic. It could also be yeast infection and if that is the case you could try Lotrimin. But if it's blistery take her to the Dr as it could be really infectious.
My youngest had a really bad diaper rash that wouldn't go away when she was younger and we found that putting on the diaper cream ointment and then putting baby powder on worked wonders. It kept her diaper area dryer and reduced the moisture on her bottom. She would cry a lot when she got rashes because every time she peed the ammonia in her urine would burn the rash and using the baby powder helped keep it from burning. A recipe you can try that works wonders in a bottle of Pepto (generic is fine) mixed with a tube of Aquaphor. Usually that will get rid of redness very quickly.
HTH.
LaDonna 07-20-2009, 01:00 AM The crying could just be because of the rash and urinating can irritate that....
As for the diaper rash...try cornstarch....when you do a diaper change...clean her really well and then let her "air" out for a little while and then sprinkle the cornstarch on her bottom and new diaper......I swear by cornstarch
When my girls did get a diaper rash it was rare but i would always use cornstarch and by next diaper change it was gone.....i have done the same with my niece and got the same results....
krazee4jc 07-20-2009, 01:08 AM O' Yuck!!! I know the cranberry will help lots for UTI but for the rash, if nothing seems to work maybe you'll have to get an antibiotic in case it's yeast :( it's an ugly red blistering rash

We use cornstarch here, too. We clean him gently, let S's bottom air out for a bit and then put cornstarch in a fresh diaper when he is nice and dry.
BlessedMommy 07-20-2009, 11:18 AM Just an FYI about yeast infections, if it were that, antibiotics wouldn't work on it. You would need something that was like the opposite of an antibiotic because antibiotics actually kill off good bacteria and create yeast.
If you have to give an antibiotic for other reasons, you should always give the child probiotics to replace the good bacteria that is being killed.

Yes, for a yeast infection you need an anti-fungal ointment like Lotrimin not an antibiotic. And definitely pack in the probiotics if you do end up having a bacterial infection and need antibiotics.
Ashlee 07-20-2009, 11:49 AM Fesh air will do a diaper rash a lot of good. If you can get away with letting her go bare bottomed for an hour or two throughout the day I would. Also, wetwipes will not help a diaper rash so try to stay away from them.. wiping the skin in that area at all will probably hurt and irritate so if you could rinse her in the tub instead with just warm water I'd do that. Then when you have to put her in a diaper try a little bit of olive oil and a sprinkle of corn starch. Then make sure you change her right after she wets or soils her diaper. If you can do cloth diapering that would help too. Hope it heals soon! HTH
PS, if the coconut oil doesn't seem to be working I'd lay off it. She could have a sensitivity to it.. I think my dd does.
PianoMama 07-20-2009, 12:00 PM i just wanna post a pic, but that probably wouldn't be the most appropriate thing! it's not blisters or *****...just all over red.
thank you for all the ideas for creams and such. i will try what I have first then off to the store.
PianoMama 07-20-2009, 12:01 PM wow, I got sensored! ha! pus - ish...there..haha!
danou 07-22-2009, 05:15 PM If you've determined it's not yeast... I know of a home remedy that worked really well for my son... cornstarch and flour browned in the frying pan. Don't know why it works- it just does.
PianoMama 07-22-2009, 05:57 PM Thank you all for your replies! This is what I used:
equal parts of
- Maximum Strength Desitin
- Hydrocortisone cream
- Vaginal Antifungal cream
It's been 2 days since I started using this mixture and it's nearly cleared up! PTL!!!
His butterfly 07-22-2009, 11:17 PM Glad to hear it's getting better.
