View Full Version : bedtime crying

We've been having issues putting Callum to bed lately. He used to go down without a fuss, even if he didn't fall asleep when I fed him. But around when he started crawling he started putting up a stink for both naps and bedtime. After much trial and error, I have determined that it is not possible for me to settle him by going in the room. He just gets angry and riled up. Dh tends to go in at night if he has fussed for 10-15mins and doesn't seem to be settling. Which is almost every night, but for whatever reason, he will settle for dh. For naps he tends to cry/fuss for 15-30 minutes before going to sleep. *how* tired he is doesn't eliminate the fussing, it may just shorten it somewhat.

Do you think this is just a 'phase' and that we should just keep doing as we are, or is this going to turn into something huge and obnoxious? We aren't opposed to letting him cry a bit, obviously, but I don't want this to be a long term thing. Any suggestions?

I would say it's just a phase.

So, what's happening is...he's nursing but may or may not be asleep..you go ahead and put him to bed where he decides to fuss a bit instead of going straight to sleep as he used to. ??

I think each of mine have done this. It didn't last terribly long. We just continued our routine and, like you, hubs would go deal with them and they would usually go down shortly thereafter. It's a bit of retraining, on that part. Otherwise, they're just entering a different stage and not sure they *want* to go to sleep yet. They know they're missing out on something. :p

Just keep it up, I think you'll get through.

Naps...yeah, we have that too. My little dude will nurse and fall asleep on me but every stinkin' time I go to lay him in bed to nap he wakes up and cries at me. Generally I can just leave him and he'll go back to sleep after 10 minutes or so. Other times...I have to give up and go get him. Sometimes then he will nurse and go back to sleep (LOL) or he will run around like he was never tired. Goon!

Eventually things will even out. It has with all my others, I don't doubt it will with this one, or yours, as well. :)

Yes, that's it exactly. Thanks, Tara. Kinda ridiculous that I'm starting to get all worried about it, especially with baby #3. Stopping to actually think about it, I'm sure my others did this at some point too. I'm pretty sure it has to do with his new ability to crawl/pull himself up to stand. Finally clued in to the fact that while I lay him down in bed, he doesn't actually have to stay lying down. Annoying just the same. Hopefully it won't last long.

Off topic.....ACK! I just realized Callum is 9 months old now! How on earth??? And somehow, when they hit 9mths the one year mark feels so close....recently I've found myself thinking of his birthday and weaning him. (My other two weaned at 1 year.)
