But I *guess* it comes from the idea that you don't have to fold it 'fancy-like' in order to build up the center absorbancy area. The hard part is already done for ya ???

Yeah, that's right. The original diaper was a flatfold, a 27 inch square that you had to fold to build in the absorbency. A prefold already has the absorbency.
