NFP Terms and Definitions
Mods, can you sticky this please?
NFP-Natural Family Planning, it refers to charting the fertile times and practicing total abstinence during times of fertility to avoid pregnancy
With perfect use, it is about 98-99% effectiveness, depending on which method of charting is used
FAM-Fertility Awareness Method, this refers to charting the fertile times and use of birth control such as condoms, diaphragms, spermicides, or
non-procreative forms of intercourse during the fertile time. It's effectiveness is largely dependent upon the failure rate of the birth control
utilized.
LAM-Short for "Lactational Amennorhea Method" this referrs to the natural infertility following the birth of a baby, when a
woman is fully breastfeeding and amenorrheic (meaning that her periods have not resumed) In order to be effective, specific
guidelines must be followed and the woman must recognize when she no longer meets the criteria and use an alternate method of family
planning.
Ecological Breastfeeding-A term coined by John and Sheila Kippley which describes the only type of breastfeeding that is normally
associated with extended breastfeeding infertility. The 7 standards are as follows:
1. Do exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. This means that your baby does not take any other liquids or solids of any kind. The only nourishment your baby receives is your milk from your breasts.
2. Pacify your baby at your breasts. This means that you pacify your baby at the breast for comfort or to meet his other emotional needs. This comfort nursing usually involves nursing the baby to sleep.
3. Don’t use bottles and pacifiers.
4. Sleep with your baby for night feedings. (co-sleeping and nursing during the night)
5. Sleep with your baby for a daily nap-feeding. (go sleep for a short time while nursing the baby)
6. Nurse frequently day and night and avoid schedules. (that means no schedules, not even a 2 hour one)
7. Avoid any practice that restricts nursing or separates you from your baby.
Many people who choose not to use any form of family planning will practice ecological breastfeeding. On average it will space babies between 18-30 months
apart without any abstinence or fertility awareness
Billings Ovulation Method-This is a mucus only method developed by John and Evelyn Billings. It relies heavily on mucus sensations and detailed mucus teaching.
Creighton Model of NFP-This is an extremely detailed mucus-only method of NFP that has different guidelines than Billings. This method tends to have more classes
and follow up's than Billings. In addition to being a method of family planning, it is also used as a health tool for women to help discover reproductive abnormalities
and help with TTC difficulties.
Sympto-thermal method-This method combines mucus, temperature, and optional cervix checks for a cross checking method.
CCL-Short for Couple to Couple League, this refers to an NFP teaching organization that certifies a husband and wife to provide teaching in the local areas.
Temperature taking-it be may done orally, vaginally, or rectally. Most women get acceptable results from oral temps, but some women (especially mouth breathers) may
find better results from vaginal or rectal temps. The most important thing is to pick one method and not switch temp taking methods in the middle of the cycle.
TCOYF-Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. This is a book that describes charting for birth control, pregnancy achievement and other topics.
The author still recommends an in-person class, though, as superior to self-teaching through the book and warns about the inherent risks taken with natural birth control
and the importance of practicing the method correctly
