View Full Version : Toddler Beds

Ok, so I'm wondering who uses Toddler Beds and who doesn't. We didn't with Aaron, but I'm not sure what we're going to do with Ian. Both boys sleep in the same room now and I'm considering putting them either in the same bed (a full size bed) or getting bunk beds. But I don't want to spend a lot of money on something that will only be used for a few years. Aaron has the full sized bed and Ian has a twin size in his room that will eventually be his, but Aaron sleeps in it now. We are going to make one bedroom a play room until they grow out of it and need seperate bedrooms. I'm just fishing for suggestions!

If you are worried about him falling out, have you considered a portable bed rail? Safety 1st makes a few different ones: http://www.safety1st.com/product_category.asp?searchType=category&searchValue=66

they are not very expensive - much less expensive than buying a toddler bed anyway - that way you can just stick him in the twin bed straight away.

We bought a crib that converts into a toddler bed, but we plan on having another kid... so she'll probably never use it as a toddler bed... so we are considering just investing in twin-size bunk beds straight away, or something like that.

We didn't buy a toddler bed- we felt like it wouldn't get enough use to justify the expense.

My DD started out with a twin mattress on the floor- then in a regular twin bed with one of the Safety 1st rails.

Ours have all gone from our bed to their own twin bed somewhere around 1 yr
Some have started with the mattress on the floor, others straight to the bed on box springs with a rail, others w/o the rail LOL Just whatever we had at the time, really.

With this one we're considering a toddler bed simply for space issues. We already swapped rooms up here, dh and I taking the smaller so sis can have the bigger one to share, soon, with the baby. But still, 2 twin beds in there is a squeeze. We'll be here at least til summer, he'll need to be in his own bed more well before that time (he's already been starting his nights in the other room..though, not now while sick, but anywho..) So, we have 6 months here...I'm thinking the toddler bed is going to be the way to go for us this time around.

I'd rather just avoid that step and go straight to the twin, but....space constraints over-rule this time. *shrug*

How old is your elder boy? "They" don't recommend bunk beds (the top bunk that is) for under 6. That's one I stick pretty closely to. I want to make sure they're nice and stable getting up and down ya know?
If space is an issue...I'd put 'em both in the full or go ahead with a toddler bed for the younger, twin for the elder. Until they were ready for bunks.

Rhy has a toddler bed that I bought from Toys R Us for $45. She will be in it for a year or so. It is small and low to the ground. It is a Disney Little Mermaid one so she loves it.

When dd was born, we bought one of those cribs that transition to a toddler bed so it has never really been a problem. When ds was born, I found a used toddler bed at a yard sale for around $15, I think. DD sleeps in it now and I plan to convert ds's crib (dd's old crib) to a toddler bed when he moves into his new room in the spring. My mom saved my twin bed so I will probably just buy a new mattress for it pretty soon so that dd can use it. She's getting to be a big girl now. {sigh}

We bought DS a toddler bed, but he did not like it at all. He wanted to be like us with our big bed. So that is what ended up working for us. We gave him our mattress/box spring & we got a new one. (Works for me :D )

My DD has a toddler bed and loves it. She calls it her big girl bed. It is low to the ground and was pretty inexpensive. (I want to say it was less than $50) It was nice that she could keep her mattress and we got a new mattress for when DS was born.

My dd has a toddler bed and she loves it! She loves to be able to get into and out of bed on her own.

We did the toddler bed with all four of ours, also. :D The things I like about them are that they are very inexpensive, they're cute, you can use your crib mattress, they're close to the floor, and most important of all for me... I used all my lovely crib bedding each time with them!!! I paid a fortune for that stuff and wanted to use it for as long as I could, and it was still so cute when the kids became too active for their cribs. Not to mention that my nurseries were all decorated around baby's crib bedding. So for us, toddler beds saved us money for awhile. [cheer]

Thanks girls! I'm still up in the air about what to do. I think it's definately time to be coming out of the crib. Ian is almost 20 mos old and he's testing his limits in the crib! :D

Aaron will be 9 in Feb, so the top bunk wont be an issue for us. Actually he's excited about the possibility of getting bunk beds! :D

Hi,
I was going to make a posting about this but decided just to post in here instead. My dd is 19 months, we got one of the cribs that transitions into a toddler bed. I was wondering when she would be ready for it? I am afraid if I put the side up instead of the crib railing she would climb over and fall out. Suggestions? Thanks!

We've bought two cribs like that. (For $100, it seemed the way to go.) My youngest is only 7 months, so she'll not be making the transition anytime soon. For our oldest, we really planned to wait longer than we did, but we changed the bed when she was about 18 mo.

Because she'd figured out that she could crawl out of the bed and was doing so just about every day. Rather than taking the chance of her hurting herself by falling while she was scaling the crib, we set up her toddler bed. She was closer to the ground that way!

I had planned to wait until Audrey was 2, but it seems that she had other ideas. This is Dr. Greene's advice on how to do it, http://www.drgreene.com/21_364.html, and here's what Dr. Sears has to say http://askdrsears.com/faq/sl20.asp (btw, he says to do it whenever you and your child are ready).
