View Full Version : No nutritional benefits to nursing past a year???????
BlessedMommy 11-28-2006, 08:38 AM Has anyone read What to Expect the Toddler years? They actually say that there's no nutritional benefits to nursing your baby past a year old. Am I just reading an old edition? Have they updated that since? I mean, it's not like my milk goes sour magically on my baby's first birthday.
~Tara~ 11-28-2006, 10:01 AM Here's what I have to say about that
pppffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttt ttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!
Puhleeze!
Like you said...your milk suddenly changes and 'goes sour' once the baby hits 1 yr? L M H O
Ignorant people I tell ya  (and no I"m not 'name calling' I mean ignorant in the true sense of the word..un/mis-informed, without knowledge)
Do they say anything about whether formula is still nutritionally beneficial? Many bottle fed babies still take a bottle of formula even after 1 yr and, formula is supposed to 'mimic' breastmilk, correct? I suppose there's no benefit of it either. Oh, but that's right, they're pushing whole cow's milk at 1 yr anywho *big eye roll*
Anywho...
ppppfffffftttttttttttttttt on those goofballs!!!
(oh and I doubt you have some 'ancient' edition)
logosnimby 11-28-2006, 06:10 PM wow?! i thought they changed the guidelines to up to 2yrs old. but you must be reading an old edition
luvmy4sons 11-28-2006, 06:36 PM In biblically times...they weaned children at the age of 3! Hmmm... :?
~Tara~ 11-28-2006, 07:05 PM and even 3 is likely an under-estimate ;)
love2bmom 11-28-2006, 08:32 PM I am not a big fan of her books... What to Expect... ! Lots of progressive thinking.
Crissyanna 11-29-2006, 09:09 PM The WHO says 2 years on b/f. The AAP says 1 yr.
I did not put any stock in the what to expect when expecting book. It drove me nuts. My MIL got me a copy of 1st year, I um, "accidentally" left it at her house.....Thought about getting it for a light read and good laugh though.
BlessedMommy 11-29-2006, 09:28 PM Yeah, I know what you mean Crystal. A friend lent me a copy of Your Pregnancy Week by Week and I would read it when I needed a rant or a laugh. On the back cover it said, "Because only a doctor's advice will do..." My hubby and I about busted a gut on that one. And of course the book said that by any doctor's standards, homebirth is terribly risky. My midwife said that that statement is absolutely correct, however doctors don't base their opinions on the well put together studies out there on the safety of homebirth. LOL.
buttercup_97140 12-06-2006, 01:20 AM I have to agree with you all! And PPpppppppffffffftttt to them also from me! LOL. The What to expect books are pretty much a waste of good tree. I read that part about breastfeeding too....and the sad thing is...many women read that not knowing much about anything pg or child rearing and think it's golden. So sad. My Dd is 15 months, still nurses and since I am pg, my milk is pretty much down to nothing, but she still enjoys it, and is still getting a bit here and there....so I guess I am whacked out of my mind? LOL right!

Oh, you didn't know?? Babies magically need cow's milk on their first birthday, whether they were breast fed or not.
Godzgirl 12-06-2006, 11:18 AM Here's what i got to say about books you take the meat and spit out the bones (which refers to taking the good and dumping the rest).
Timmys mom 12-06-2006, 11:25 AM Yep Godzgirl, my sister-in-law told me that when she gave me the book, and its very good advice. Theres some good stuff in there and some nonsense.
Anyway, I breastfed Timmy until he was 19 mos old. And I think it did him a world of good, I don't think he ever got sick until after that. And he's always been a very healthy child.

LOL! Well, since my husband and I don't use straight cow's milk very much at all and only use other dairy products in moderation, our daughter will be malnourished once she turns 1 and is not getting cow's milk. [rofl] Why in the world do some books propogate the myth that not only our children MUST get milk from other species, but that that milk is supposedly superior to human milk? Puhlease.....
