View Full Version : Dressing themselves?

I gave Abby her pants this morning and told her to try and put them on herself. I wanted to see if she could. Well she did! :D She can put her shoes on (if they are velcro) and she has been trying to put her socks on and her tops with buttons. She tries to button them up LOL

When could your child dress themselves alone? Should I be encouraging her to dress herself? She's 2 1/2 now. :)

Yeah Abby loves shoes too and has been putting hers on since about 1. She used to put them on the wrong feet but 99 percent of the time now she gets them on the right feet LOL
Not sure if she can put a shirt on ... She put her pj top back on one morning and was trying to do the buttons up LOL
Yeah Abby can do zippers as long as the bottom part is done .. how you put both sides together in the bottom of the zip before zipping up. She can't do that.

I figure if she can put pants on she must be ready for PTing :)

Oh and the funny thing is that when I gave her pants to her to put on she cried and threw a patty LOL Then I sat down to feed Sophie and she sat on the floor and put her pants on.

Taking off her clothes Sam has no problem with, but putting them on is a bit of challenge. She can put her sweaters on if it has a zipper and a regular ol' t-shirts, but pants...HA! LOL! She put both of her legs in one pant leg the other day and had DH & I rolling!! As far as the shoes, she has a terrible obsession with them, so she takes them off and on all the time and helps herself to mine as well!! I have got to get a pic of that for you guys!

 so cute! Abby likes to wear everyone elses shoes too. Even my hubbys! And he has size 12 feet! [rofl]

Yeah sometimes Abby puts both legs into one pant leg. I have to correct her and then she is ok. :D

Renee definately encourage her

My kids have been dressing themselves for a while now - when we are just around the house I allow them to pick their clothes, but when we go out I pick the clothes and they put them on (they make some funny choices as you can imagine LOL).

It makes life so easy when you are caught up with bubby and the kids need to get dressed.

Did she act oh so proud of herself when she put the pants on?
Did she manage to put them on the right way?

I am still having to explain which way pants go to DS and how "knickers" go on to DD.

I think by 2-3 they should be able to dress themselves from top to bottom. My dd, who is three, still asks for help occasionally but she definately knows how to dress herself.

You must have had an advanced 2 year old! I don't think many 2 year olds could dress themselves from top to bottom correctly.
I think 3 is probably normal.

Anyhow, AM yeah she was proud I think. But every time I ask her to put her pants and tops on she will laugh and give them back to me and say "no you do it!"  It's become a funny game to her where she would rather I do it. Probably because she wants to be dressed like I do with Sophie. Just like when Sophie was born she decided she wanted bottles and dummys again. And every time I change Sophie, Abby wants to be changed as well LOL
I hand them back to her and say "no, YOU do it!" LOL And we just seem to go back and forth. So I have to put the head of the top over her head and then she finishes putting it on. The pants she will usually do herself eventually. It just takes forever.

DS has been putting on and taking off shoes for several months now but that's it. I had to laugh when I walked into his room this morning and found him sitting in his diaper! So I guess he can unzip his PJs and take them off. Maybe I should work with him to put them on and see how he does. Kids are just full of surprises!

Even worse is when they take their pants off and remove their diaper or fish stuff out of it EWWW I've had a couple of those messes to clean up. I'm just glad she's never smeared stuff over the walls or her bedding or anything like that.

I've heard those stories! I am really hoping I won't have one to tell someday!

Two words .... "duct tape" [rofl] Seriously though... if my child was taking their diaper off I would wrap some duct tape around the waist to make it harder for them to get off.
