Abby is now 2 1/2 and she is in the largest size diaper available. Even though they are for toddlers 16kg and up, and Abby is only 12.95kg. Anyway, they don't seem to be holding up very well now. She wet her bed last night and there was hardly anything in her diaper. It must have leaked out one side. And I cannot continue to diaper her if they are too small. So I guess I don't have any choice but to start PTing now LOL My issue is the cost of Pull-ups. I'm not prepared (at this stage with a little baby) to be cleaning up accidents all the time because it would just be too much washing for me right now. I just decided to start cloth diapering Sophie to save money on diapers. I'm never good at sticking to it though. I might not have any choice now because Pull Ups only come in a pack of about 10 and they are more expensive than a pack of diapers and there are 12 in a pack of those. So in other words... the money I save on disposables for Sophie I'll have to spend on Pull Ups. *sighs* I cannot wait until Abby is fully PT'd during the day at least. Right now we are buying 2 packs of diapers a week. They are double packs and $13.90. So that's $27.80 a week on diapers. And that's not including wipes.
I'm trying to cut down on the wipes too. I'm terrible with those LOL So I'm thinking of only using them for dirty diapers and when we are out. And then just using washcloths for wet bottoms only. It means more washing but it's just becoming far too costly. :(

Any ideas?

Have you tried different diaper brands for Abby at night?
It's certainly worth a try. To get you through to the point where you're really ready to potty train.

Then, all I can really say is..make a decision..sacrifice the money to keep up with diapers/pull ups until you're 'ready'. Or sacrifice that time to train so you can stop spending the money.

She may or may not be ready and you can't force that. That'll get you nowhere. But you *can* still make a decision to try it, and if she takes to it, then stick with it.But you need to make that commitment. You can put her in undies and start 'training' her, she does fine with it, but one week you decide to be lazy and buy dipes. That just isn't going to work.

What *I* would do at this point...
Get a waterproof pad to go under her at night to prevent leaks on the whole bed. and/or try a different brand diaper for her size
AND start asking her about going potty during the day. Oh, that would mean getting a potty chair if you don't have one yet. I recommend the Baby Bjorn ;) Take her to it whenever you go. Praise just for sitting, praise even bigger when she goes. Honestly, I would give pt a try on the new pack of diapers. If that seems to be going alright...go on to undies. You just gotta face it..there's a sacrifice to be made here...are you going to buck up and pay the $ for convenience? Or are you going to buck up and endure the training process with a little one?

I know, neither seem to enticing do they? hehe btdt myself

I wouldn't do the pull ups though. They're just glorified diapers for more $$ Try a different brand of diaper and go from there.

No I haven't tried that. The diapers we get now are $6.99 a pack of 12. I know Huggies and Treasures are like twice that. Pull-ups are about $9 something I think. I will be checking all the different diapers out at Nappies For Less on Saturday. To see if they have bigger sizes in different brands that are around the same price. Hopefully they'll have something. The reason I like Pullups is that she can pull them up and down herself KWIM? They do have some pullups at Nappies For Less that are just plain white without pictures on them but I don't know how good they are until I try them. I don't want to waste money on something that isn't going to hold in the urine or something KWIM? Anyway, usually they carry samples of all the different nappies and pullups so hopefully they'll let me sample one first so I don't waste money on a whole packet.

I decided last week to start PTing. But I'd prefer to use pullups rather than underwear because I'd just be cleaning up mess after mess if I use underwear straight away. Once she is going on the toilet and she is telling me each time and we are making it to the toilet most of the time then I'll switch to undies.
I plan on using the toilet with the toilet seat I got that fits on top so they don't fall through the hole LOL I have never been a big fan of pottys. I don't want to be emptying the potty into the toilet all the time EWWW I know it's all part of being a mommy I guess but it's like how I feel about emptying poop from dirty cloth diapers into the toilet and handling really wet cloth diapers.

Yeah I wish I had tried like 3 months ago because now I really don't have much choice and she might not be ready and then I have to figure out how to continue to diaper her. Unfortunately she just has big thighs and she has always been in a diaper one size up. The girl on the pack we use looks like she is about 4 LOL Not that I want to continue to use diapers until she is 4. I'm just surprised she is too big for them already.

She does have a waterproof sheet under the bedding so the mattress doesn't get wet. It's just the bedding EVERY night almost that is killing me. I don't want to limit her fluids before bedtime KWIM? As it is I only gave her 150mls before bedtime last night and she still wet it.
I have a book on potty training for girls that is for me to read to her. It even comes with a star chart and star stickers. She loves it. So I know she will enjoy getting stars on the chart. I'll let her stick them on. And she will get a reward if she goes in the toilet every time for a whole day.
I tried PTing at 15 months, 18 months and 2 years. Neither time was she ready. I wasn't expecting her to be ready though. At 2 years I thought she might be taking a slight interest. She did like to use toilet paper but never actually went in the toilet. And she wouldn't tell me before she went in her diaper. She would tell me afterwards LOL Yesterday she told me she was wet. I checked her pants and she was fine. So I thought she was just saying it so I would change her (a thing she started after Sophie arrived LOL). Silly mummy. She ended up wetting the couch. So now I have a couch cushion I have to somehow clean. I'm going to stick it in the washing machine HEHE Also recently she started saying she wants to go wee or poo in the toilet. So I think she is ready. I'm just not LOL Oh well....

Man, diaper there are EXPENSIVE! We just bought them tonight at Wal-Mart, Huggies supreme, box of 84 diapers for $19.00! :? I wonder if you could order them from Wal-Mart online for a lot cheaper than what you are paying now? Just a thought. I'm in the state of Iowa in the USA.

Renee, I know the messies doesn't seem fun and a want to do, but if she's the slightest bit ready, she's going to catch on quicker with undies than the pullups.

there is NO difference in pullups and diapers. They're just sewn on the edges instead of tapes. Please, don't waste money you don't have. You can buy really thick training undies. They're in the infant section at walmart, target, etc. here.

If she's remotely ready, and you have her in a pair of training undies, fully clothed, yeah, you may wash more, but most kids can't stand being wet. you've got to do one or the other, but I would seriously use the training undies and follow her lead. Pullups are not worth the time or money, and in a LOT of situations, cause set backs. If you research potty training, you'll find that the number of kids training later in life drastically increased when they introduced "pull ups" on the market. Back when we were little, and before, kids were trained between 18-36 months. No where near the older ages we see now still in diapers. I personally do not agree the the "pull up theory".

But, all of this is MY opinion, take what you agree with, throw the rest out

Willie is 4 (still in diapers), and I found that with the diapers, we 'peaked out' and then actually needed a smaller size again because he had lost all the baby fat, and he was much skinnier. So my recommendation would be to go with a smaller size. She's prolly leaking out through the gaps at the thighs.

while potty training with underwear, with my first daughter we also used the rubberpants/diaper cover. it helped to keep her pants dry, even when her underwear had just been peed in.

Yep everything is about twice the price here :( I am not sure I would save money ordering them from the US because I'd have to pay the Postage and Packaging as well.

Thanks for the suggestion though :)

Hey I've seen those training pants at the Baby Factory! Thanks for reminding me about them. You are probably right about Pull ups. If they feel wet then they are probably more likely to go in the toilet instead of wetting the pull up. That's common sense I guess.
Thanks :)

Yeah she is. She hasn't thinned out though. She has a big tummy LOL and big thighs. I can fit one of Sophies diapers  on her but it's very small on her and I'm not sure it would stay on for long LOL With the ones she's wearing now the tabs have even broken and the nappy has started falling off. So I think her tummy is just too wide now LOL!

I guess I should stop being such a woos (sp?) and just deal with it LOL My mum never used Pull ups or training pants. She just used plain old underwear so I'm sure she had tons of mess to deal with. The only difference is that I was PT'd before my sister was born. So she only had one kid to deal with.
I don't mind her wetting her pants and clothes. It's just cleaning the carpet and couch etc... because she sits on the couch.
I do think that they learn faster though if they are just wearing undies.

I think I'm going to go with using training pants at first and then when she is staying dry during the day I'll start using undies. I won't be using them overnight though. Overnight she can stay in a diaper until she is probably about 3 1/2-4 because I know they don't learn to stay dry at night for much longer.
