School Daze and Mom Craze

November, 2007

By Trish Berg

It doesn't take much to make me feel like a kid again. Sometimes, just playing kick ball in my front yard with my kids will do the trick.

Though I can't seem to round second and make it to third as fast as I used to. And since second base is our well pipe and third is a lam post, I usually trip in between on a tree root or dip in the ground and end up looking like a clown running in big clown shoes.

But this week, I traveled back in time and felt like a kid again because I had to go to school.

I even had to sit in those tiny little chairs with my knees about bumping my chin, and felt a little like Alice in Wonderland when she ate that flower and grew BIG.

This week, was parent teacher conferences at school. Having three now in school, that meant a lot of juggling just to get there. And I had to go alone. Mike, being a teacher in the same school district, had to attend his own parent teacher conferences, so I had to fly solo.

I stood in line outside the classrooms with all the other moms and dads, looking a bit dazed and timid. It's a lot like waiting to see the doctor for your diagnosis, hoping what you have is treatable.

And it made me feel like a kid again when I had to walk into the classroom and sit in that tiny little chair. I don't quiet remember my butt spilling over the edge at 10 as it does now at, well, older than 20.

OK - older than 30, but that's as far as I take that!

As much as I detested sitting in those little chairs, I knew it was important to meet with their teachers. I know what an impact teachers can have on a child's life. I know because I have lived it.

Miss Romito, my 6th grade English teacher, changed my whole outlook on reading, writing and speaking in front of people. She even taught me a singing rhyme to remember my helping verbs that I can still recite today.

"Am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been, do, does, did, have, has, had, may, might, must, can, could, shall, should, will, would."

There - but it sounds better when I sing it.

Maybe not.

She taught me to love the English language, and I even baked a bunny cake and gave my own lesson to the class as to how to bake their own bunny cakes.

Miss Romito was tall, and beautiful, kind and caring, and most of all fun. Every boy was in love with her and every girl wanted to be her best friend.

Mr. Holland, in 7th grade, helped to learn to love math. Again, he made learning fun, and I was amazed that I actually GOT algebra. Mrs. Bigley helped comfort me when my parents divorced, and Mrs. Slater made 3rd grade more fun than a circus.

I know my kids are learning a lot more at school than how water evaporates into steam, how to spell u-n-d-e-r-s-t-a-n-d, and the names of the continents.

More than anything, they are learning about life, about how to become lifelong learners to blossom into the grown up people bursting out through the seams.

And as good as their teachers are, I also know that I am the most important teacher in their lives. And I sometimes let then business of life stop me from being a more involved teacher.

You know, I think I might just make a bunny cake tonight. And teach my kids how to cut two round cakes into shapes that make that adorable bunny. We can lick the spoons of batter and share the cake for dessert.

And maybe, just maybe, I'll teach them my helping verb song so they can sing along to the tune.

It doesn't really matter what we do, as long as we do it together.

Kids are natural learners. They are like sponges ready to soak it all up if we provide the water.

So maybe tonight we'll just play a game of kickball. Because I think it's more about the fun than the anything else!
